Anyone else had house spiders recently?

They are 4 months too early!

My dd has recently moved up to the loft bedroom and has been very unlucky with 3 spiders up there in 2 days. She is diagnosed ASD and terrified of all bugs.

Yesterday I did a thorough clean, sprayed spider repellent spray and put in one of those plug in things. She then had another one last night!

I really need to get on top of this because what with her other issues (anxiety, erratic school attendance, poor sleep) she can't deal with any more.

Things I've read that can help deter them - peppermint oil, lemon/orange skin, conkers. Has anyone tried these and do they work?

My middle dd used to sleep in this room and she did not have any more spiders than the rest of the house so I don't understand it.

Huge one in the kitchen sink the other day which scared the crap out of me. Haven't seen any others (probably tempting fate saying that) apart from the tiny ones you get round the edges of your windows/doors.

You need to spray round with Raid! Cockroach killer. Then ventilate! Do you have a velux window? They will come in off the roof tiles..if so, then you can get fly screen kits to stop them coming in. Also, they like cardboard and fabric, so buy plastic storage boxes for wardrobes etc and keep everything off the floor.

Oioicaptain · 20/05/2022 10:01

Re the roof tiles, we've had a lot of really heavy rain, so the bastards will try and get in if you've had the windows open.

We've had some shockingly big ones in the last week! When you say 4 months too early, you mean they are only around in September/October because that's not the case in my experience?

bendmeoverbackwards · 20/05/2022 10:03

Thanks, yes there are 2 velux windows which have been open when it's warm. But there is an air conditioning unit up there so will turn that on and leave windows closed!

Yes I thought September was the time they come in when the nights start getting colder. Do they look for warmth? So keeping the room cool will help?

I think September October is mating season so you see them scuttling around looking for romance but I could be wrong. But they live in the house all year round you just don't see them as often.

LizBennet · 20/05/2022 10:19

I have cellar spiders so I don't see the big horrible ones 🕷

Fuzzy303 · 20/05/2022 10:25

conkers in the corners of the room I've found to work well but not quite as well as my cat who finds them the most delicious thing he's ever tasted

TurquoiseSwirl · 20/05/2022 10:30

Are you killing them or putting them outside? As they’ll know their way back in so quickly kill them.
you can buy scented spider glue traps that you’d an check each day and quickly dispatch to get any that are living in there and put in corners/under cupboards etc.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 20/05/2022 10:38

We have had a few big ones recently , massive one in the bath so left a toilet roll escape ladder for it. Huge one sitting in the middle of the kitchen this morning, had to shuffle it with my foot so it would go under the washing machine, before the dog spotted it.
I don't mind them.

Notanotherwindow · 20/05/2022 10:41

They'll come in out of the wet if you leave windows open, especially overnight.

Conkers do seem to work and wiping window frames with strong peppermint oil.

Also you need to kill them. They know the way back, they aren't stupid, they'll just keep coming back otherwise.

Could she tolerate a spindly cellar spider in a corner? Because they eat the big black fuckers so they're unlikely to live near a predator.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 20/05/2022 11:23

We have lots of the cellar spiders, I never remember them being a thing when I was younger, they tend to stick to the corners though, although one did meander across my bare legs when I was sitting on the loo !

Wrongkindofovercoat · 20/05/2022 11:26

DD's room was plagued for a while when we couldn't shut her window properly , I cleaned it all down with neat teatree oil and that seemed to help.

They dont come in mostly. They're in the house all year around, doing pest control. Mating season you see the big ones. It's not an exact science though and the likely culprit will be the roof.. I've got a fair few but I encourage them to set up shop. When I do the indorex thing once or twice a year, I always find dead spiders as well after.

If you use conkers, make sure you put holes in them first.

What’s a cellar spider?

Big spindly legs, little body. Do hardcore webs. I've brought them home from work before.
