Do I need to see a doctor?

I know I could call 111 but I think they would send me to A&E and I don't think I need to go.

I shut my finger in a door yesterday and crushed it around the knuckle area. It didn't swell up very much and there's hardly any bruising but most of my finger above the knuckle is numb. I have full mobility so don't think it's broken, just the numbness.

I am assuming that it is nerve damage and will heal itself but am a bit worried that as its my right first finger I might have done some permanent damage.

I have an important surgery next week and do not want to risk getting covid and it being delayed for at least 2 months, which is another reason I'm reluctant to go to hospital and sit in a waiting room for hours.

I can't see that there's anything a GP could do anyway without scans and things. Do you think it's OK to give it 10 days, during which time I'll have my surgery, and then see the GP if it's still numb by then?

Mobility doesn't tell you anything about a broken bone.

You need an xray. Go to minor injuries if you have one or it's off to A & E.

Numbness indicates nerve damage.

It's not even painful any more, just a bit tender to touch and the numbness. If it was broken wouldn't it be painful?

Not necessarily - bones don't "feel" pain.
Go get it looked at.

First finger of your dominant hand? Is it really worth taking the risk? To my mind, numbness is worse than pain, and worth getting checked out.
