Claiming PIP

Hi. For all those people who have limited mobility, or relatives with limited mobility, so maybe can walk a little way, but then have to stop and rest because of pain, have you/they been able to claim any part of PIP? And what about obtaining a blue badge? I have a relative whose mobility is severely compromised in this way, making every decision about anything, even visiting a restaurant can be a challenge if the car park is some distance. I'd be interested to know about the possibility of claiming and any challenges you faced. Also my relative is very proud so that's another hurdle, making me more reluctant to suggest it if it's likely to be unsuccessful.

You don't need PIP mobility to get a blue badge. But you'd have to provide evidence stating that you have a long term (ie, not a broken leg) disability which affects your ability to walk. You can get a blue badge automatically if you get 8 or more points in the moving around section.

PIP is not just about whether you can walk but whether you can walk reliably ( so without falling etc), within a reasonable timeframe, without pain etc, so it's really important to explain that on the form and back it up with medical evidence. If your relative needs to stop frequently because of pain or breathlessness etc, then explain that. If they use an aid, walking stick or frame etc then explain that. As above you don't need PIP mobility to get a Blue badge but if you do score a certain number of points for PIP mobility , you mat be awarded a BB automatically whiteout an assesment. Otherwise it is discretionary.

@TigerRag @Babyroobs Thanks so much. That gives me plenty to consider. This isn't a broken leg problem it's a chronic and deteriorating spinal issue. 4 and a half years of struggling and having surgery, various other medical procedures, and lots of painkilling drugs with all the side effects they bring, but nothing really works it's just getting worse.

I higher rate mobility PIP and a blue badge purely on my epilepsy. It used to be really hard to get anything for epilepsy but it changed. Now, because, it’s done on risk of falls I didn’t have a problem. After I have a seizure, I need to get back to the car very quickly and can’t hang about. We also have a motability car which my husband drives as I can’t 😢

For a blue badge have a look at their councils criteria as they do vary.
