Passport applications when they have expired.

The government websites are really hard to get the information you need form so I'm hoping someone might be able to help.
Entire families passports are expired, I tried to apply for dd1s driving license and her passport had not expired when I applied but it has since expired so the application won't go through.

She doesn't want to learn to drive yet so I though it might be easier to apply for a passport first then the driving licence when this comes through.
My passport is 10 years out of date. I realised it would be a sensible idea if we all had valid passports and since dds are 16 and 18 they may well want to travel in the next ten years.
My main question is can I still apply for them online if they are expired?
Also I can't even find dd2s passport, can I still apply if I can't find the old one?

Yes I did, mine was nearly two years out of date as hadn't renewed due to covid

Joopy · 19/05/2022 08:17

I renewed mine online but I had the old one. When I lost my passport in the past it was a longer process as someone had to sign my photos etc.

ditavonteesed · 19/05/2022 08:18

Also do you have to send the old one off? Dd uses it as her only form of id so will not part with it as very young looking 18 year old.

You do have to send the old one off unless it is lost.
With the lost one, a digital application means someone has to say online that you are who you say you are, instead of signing a photo, so as lots as they're near a computer it doesn't take as long as it used to.

dementedpixie · 19/05/2022 08:21

They would be done as renewals and can be done online. The old passports are sent off as part of the process and are returned with a corner cut off after the new passports are sent to you

ditavonteesed · 19/05/2022 08:23

Argh so that would leave dd1 with no I'd. can't work out how to get round this. This was why I was applying for the driving licence. Why does everything have to be so complicated.

You could do a paper driving licence application although that takes longer than doing it online

dementedpixie · 19/05/2022 08:28

How long ago did your dds passport expire?
The online service for driving licence application says you can use a passport that expired within the 12 months

Motherhubbardscupboard · 19/05/2022 08:34

Do a paper application for the driving licence, then when that comes back do the passport application and use the licence as ID. My DC doesn't have a British passport so we took this route for the driving licence recently, it took about 8 or 9 weeks I think. Current processing times are on the DVLA website, and as you're not in a hurry for the passports, this seems like the best route

ditavonteesed · 19/05/2022 08:34

It only expired mid may. They have sent her an email saying more info needed but I can't get online as it just says to enter valid passport number when I try

For your DD18, just say that it's lost, so then she can keep it as ID in the meantime. You just put 'replace lost passport' instead of renew. I did that for one of ours and it went through fine; they obviously didn't ask for the old one.

Takingabreakagain · 19/05/2022 08:37

Could you apply for a citizen ID card first so your DD has some photo ID. Then you'll be able to send off her old passport

Apply for a new passport as lost?

ditavonteesed · 19/05/2022 08:39

I just thought of the same thing, I'm a bit slow this morning. Will try and phone dvla and see what problem is as well. Thanks so much for the help. I got a bit can't see the wood for the trees this morning.

My dd just uses a photo of her passport as ID.

My dd just uses a photo of her passport as ID.

Sainsbury's refused that when DD tried it to buy an energy drink. Far too easy to fake I imagine.

How long did it take to come back ?
