Excruciating back pain... help!

StillMedusa · 18/05/2022 21:59

I have back problems... waiting for MRI report.. suspected Ankylosing Spondylitis ( Dad had it) plus some slipped discs, so I'm used to a level of pain.
But tonight I made some slight move..and I'm literally unable to move without screaming. Can't put weight through my right leg, every move, sitting, standing, anything... really really hurts.( I can still feel my butt so not worried about cauda equina at the mo)

I don't think there is any point ringing 111, I know there is no magic solution. I've taken Naproxen and Paracetamol.

I'll ring the docs tomorrow and beg for something stronger... frankly I'd take anything at this point. But I really really need to be able to get to work tomorrow... new job, training course.

ANY tips for self help to get me through the next 48 hours?!

Unless it eases off, I don't see you going to work tomorrow. I'm sorry op, l really feel for you.

I don't think I can suggest anything you won't have already tried.

would it be risky for you to go to a chiropractor?

ChatterMonkey · 18/05/2022 22:06

I had similar recently but without any history of back issues and 111 were going to send an ambulance as they weren't keen on trying to get me in a car. (Went in the car in the end,dp drove me)

I was seen really quickly as they wanted to rule out anything more serious, but was muscular so not serious as it could have been

They said that it defo needed to be seen though, to rule out other things. Not sure if the history you have makes it more or less likely that they want to see, or if they'll assume its all connected.

Maybe gp tomorrow?

How are you getting on OP @StillMedusa

StillMedusa · 19/05/2022 23:29

Drugged up!
Naproxen, gabapentin, paracetamol and now diazapam. In a slightly fuzzy haze and slightly reduced pain. My GP was great, thankfully and is chasing my MRI results too.
Somehow I made it to my training session this morning and my colleague basically carried me in (I woke at 5am after 4 hours sleep and it took me an hour to get dressed as couldn't bend!) but then got packed off home. Off tomorrow sick so hoping by the end of the weekend I can move a little better!

So fed up with it. I'm active (walk miles with my dog, I'm slim, I don't do any back endangering sports) but my bloody spine is conking out on me more and more often! S'not fair!!!

My back is fucked too, has been since my early 20s. Sounds like you need a good dose of diazepam and to just relax as much as you can to help ease the spasm. When it is bearable I would go to a chiropractor. My back can go in an instant and in that moment my life for the next days/weeks/months completely changes. It is a bastard.

My sympathies willowstar mine too... I caught a patient falling as a young student nurse and it's been progressively worse over the years even without the likelihood of inheriting my Dad's disease. I can be fine one day and totally unable to move the next.
Hideous when I've finally changed (back breaking) job after 17 years...!
