I have both but I rarely use the card. I do think its handy to have though for times when I need to send my passport off somewhere; I had to send my passport to student finance to get approved for a student loan and I felt more comfortable having a second type of passport in case I needed to travel. However, you appear to have another non-Irish citizenship so that is less of an issue for you. I also use it as ID.

You should also note that you can't go through the electronic passport gates with the card, only the book.

Overall, I find the card useful but it's definitely not a necessity.
