Can you give a 10 year old infant suspension Calpol?

Hi there

Random one - my daughter of almost 11 needs calpol but I seem to run out of 6+

Can I give her infant suspension? If so, how much? She doesn't want to take a paracetamol as she doesn't like swallowing tablets

Many thanks

Of course you can ! Just do the maths to work out the adult ( as long as 12 year old is not underweight) equivalent dose in mls.

Firesidefox · 18/05/2022 15:54

Of course!

6 plus is 250mg strength, infant is 120mg so roughly double what she would have on 6 plus

Yes. When desperate before I worked out what my adult dose was so I could take it Smile

My 18 year old still takes it as he is unable to swallow tablets. I try and buy the 6 plus but can't always get it.

If you look at the leaflets in the box, it explains to you how much paracetamol is in each spoonful.

Infant suspension is 120mg in 5ml, and a 10-12 year old would have a dose of 500mg (2 x 5ml) in the 6+, so if you give 4 x 5ml of Infant ( 4 x 120mg = 480mg) it's slightly under dosing but crucially, not anything over.

Can you still get the calpol fast melts? Like tablets but dissolve on your tongue

felineweird · 18/05/2022 16:00

Thank you all! Thanks for the explanations I am hopeless at maths so wouldn't have known what to work out

@dementedpixie I think so but unfortunately I haven't got any

You can also buy soluble paracetamol if you need any for the future

ChimChimeny · 18/05/2022 16:06

It should have the dosage on the bottle/box.

I think DD has the 6 years plus & I usually only give her 5ml unless she's really suffering (dosage is 10 ml)

Tdcp · 18/05/2022 16:08

I had calpol recently as it was the only thing I had in 😂

itsgettingweird · 18/05/2022 16:31

Yes. My ds is 17 and can't swallow tablets due to an oral fluency issue due to muscular disability.

He uses liquid still (although we've discovered the melts which are a godsend!)

Just give the number of mls she can take for the amount of paracetamol she can have.

Usually the infants is 125mg/5ml and the 6+ is 250mg/5ml.

Do for 450mg you'd give 20ml of the infant and 10ml of the 6+.

itsgettingweird · 18/05/2022 16:32

500ml not sure why my iPad changed it!

itsgettingweird · 18/05/2022 16:32

500mg - you get my drift 🤦‍♀️🤣
