Irish MNetters - best options for longer term car rentals?

I live abroad, but am coming home to Ireland for about six weeks in total during the summer and planning another few weeks at Christmas. My family lives rurally so we really need to hire a car.

Prices are looking to be about E2500 minimum per 3 weeks, and I wondered if there were any better options? Like perhaps a 3 month lease or somesuch?

Does anyone have any ideas? My mother is unwell with cancer so we need to be there. Car hire is so expensive.

Buy a cheap model to use?

Can sell it when you are done.

So sorry to hear about your mum. Wishing her and you the best.

Thank you Flowers

Yes I thought we could do that but we can't - we don't have an Irish driving license. You seem to need that and a PPS number to buy insurance. I have that but my wife doesn't, and my eyesight isn't good enough to drive at the moment. I hope my vision will improve for the future but can't do anything about it for now.

It's frustrating.

You might be better posting in Craicnet, the section for topics relating to Ireland.

It might be worth having a look at turo.com which is like Airbnb for car hire.
Good luck.

Have you tried a local car dealership in your area?

OstrichFeathers · 17/05/2022 19:21

Where do you live? If your partner is coming with you could you get the ferry and drive? Insurance is insanely expensive even if you did buy a banger to keep at your mums.

We live in the US so can't drive there, no.

It's ages since I had car insurance in Ireland, to be fair - any ideas for a ball park price for a driver with 10+ years no claims bonus in a small non-sporty car?

I mean, I know it's a 'how long as a piece of string' question, but when I last had insurance about a decade ago the cost was in the hundreds rather than thousands?

That's interesting. Do car dealerships sometimes do short term leasing?

When I lived abroad I would hire a car through a local dealership.

What county is home for you?

Absentmindedwoman · 17/05/2022 23:00

I'm from Ireland, but the US is home now.

What county in Ireland are you going to? I might be able to point you in the direction of a dealership

Right, I presume the QE2 doesn'thave a car deck? 🤣 you can check an online broker like chill.ie for car insurance quotes to get a rough price. I don't know about US driving licences though. Do you have anyone local to your mum who would add your wife to their insurance for a bit? That can be more reasonable.
