If you have good skin (on your face)...

do you think it's mainly down to your genes, or to your diet and skincare? I take good care of my skin, don't wear much make up (laziness more than anything else), and wear SPF 50 every single day. I also don't smoke and drink little alcohol but plenty of water. However I do think that my skin looks good (I'm nearly 50) because of genes more than anything else. I do take care of it because I'd rather err on the side of caution. But I think that most skincare is a con (hence why I don't buy anything expensive) and good skin is mostly due to winning the genetic lottery. Thoughts? Can anyone provide evidence to the contrary? I'm not looking to start an argument - just interested in people's points of view and experiences.

Nothing but suncream for me because I am basically too lazy and cheap to invest in beauty products and spend time putting them on my face. My skin is really clear but if I eat loads of sugar it gets worse.

Men who shave are basically dermaplaning on a daily basis, and that helps with collagen and skin regeneration (this is according to dermatologist Davin Lim). However they aren't without wrinkles and hyperpigmentation unless they stay out of the sun. In addition, their skin tends to be thicker than women's, and that helps when it comes to wrinkles.

I’m 47 and look mid thirties. I get told this a lot and objectively, I have to say I agree. It’s genetic. My mother is 70 and has no lines or wrinkles. My dad also looks very young, my gran was mistaken for my mum, you get the picture.

I partied hard throughout my twenties and thirties and sunbathed hard too. Still like a drink now but my diet is v clean, I’m vegetarian. I use organic almond oil and rosehip
oil by the bucket load and exfoliate loads. For me that’s the key to sparkling, healthy skin, lots of exfoliating! I get through tons of muslin clothes, using one in the AM + PM. No wrinkles or lines on my face or neck.

I've always been lucky with my facial skin and I do think a lot of it is down to genetics. Between my sister, my mum and myself we've probably had about 10 spots between us in our entire lives! Mum is getting is getting quite wrinkly now but she loves the sun and alcohol. Sister hates both and is often ID'd for lottery/medicine at the age of 35.

genetic

I'm 66, I have good skin and relatively few wrinkles. I drink too much and my skincare consists of cheap (but good) moisturiser when I remember.
and frequently got sunburned when young (pre SP suncream and any suncream making my eyes sore)

Sun definitely makes a difference too though. I spent a good few years as a rep, spending many hours in a car and the right (exposed) side of my face has one or two deeper wrinkles which just don't exist on the left side.

I’ve always had oily but not really spotty skin. I’m now mid-40s with barely any lines and my skin looks good. I smoked, drank alcohol and ate rubbish through my 20s and 30s! But I’ve never been a sun worshipper and tend to head for the shade. I think the sun causes more skin damage than smoking.

Genes - I am over 60 & my DM is nearly 90, we both have good skin but we don't use expensive products (I use Nivea), I frequently sunbathe, shocking diet & lots of alcohol... just good luck. I think it actually helps to be overweight .. my closest friend is very slim but her face is really lined
