Adult literacy

Wasn't sure where to put this - hope this is ok.
I've been quite saddened by reading another thread that is active at present and I think it is terrible that in this day and age we have adults in our communities without basic literacy and numeracy skills.
I've just retired and it made me wonder if there is any way I can help, but I don't know how. Are there programmes supporting adult literacy and numeracy and if so, what kind of organisations run them? Obviously I'm not a trained teacher so wouldn't presume I could actually teach someone, but is there a role for volunteer helpers? I'm wondering if people are needed to listen to students read or something like that?
Does anyone know anything on this topic - I don't really know where to start.

Not quite what you asked, but you could volunteer to listen to children read in a primary school, or perhaps even a secondary school if they have a catch up plan. That wouldn't help current adults, but it would help the next generation.

Which thread? What do you mean by 'basic' numeracy and literacy?
My DD is sitting English GCSE tomorrow...

Try starting by asking at your local library, the staff would usually have been informed of any local groups and may even provide learning spaces. you can google adult learning near you too.

This BBC programme about a TV presenter learning to read as an adult featured a charity called Read Easy which pairs volunteers with learners. Is that the sort of thing you were thinking of?

Hi
I work in adult literacy ,started off as a volunteer depending on where you live you could try googling community learning and development or as a previous poster said ask in the library .
I work for a charity and the local council .
The work is very rewarding and varied varied ,completely different to working with children .
please feel free to PM me good luck

Thanks all.
Read Easy sounds great and is pretty much exactly the kind of thing I was imagining. Unfortunately the nearest group is more than 100 miles from where I live and I don't really think I am up to starting one myself. Since I retired I have already taken on another voluntary role that involves a lot of admin/organisation of something for children,so I don't think I have the time or headspace for another big project. I could definitely give a couple of hours a week to listening to someone read or something though. I will drop into the library next time I am in town and see if there is anything there - thanks for the suggestion.
