Need advice - caravan left in our field.

My family owns a tiny field.
For reasons only known to himself, a certain family member spotted an enormous abandoned wrecked caravan and towed it to our field, breaking an axle getting it in, and leaving it there.
He was planning on taking it away, but has lost his license to drink driving.

I’ve spoken to several scrap yards, who do not take caravans.
Caravan breakers, who will only take caravans that can be towed.
On the advice of a couple of scrapyards I rang the council, who won’t have anything to do with it as it’s on private land.

The caravan is huge, double axle. It’s waist deep inside in interior wreckage and rubbish.

How the hell do I get rid of it?

@BarbaraofSeville council doesn't deal with fly tipping on private land.

I think you need to get relative on board with resolving the issue, somehow.

Get him to physically help, by offering to help yourself? Let's dismantle it and get it gone type of thing,

Greydogs123 · 19/05/2022 06:58

We had a caravan which couldn’t be moved, so we hired a couple of odd job chaps to just dismantle it and remove the pieces to the dump. If you’re fit enough or have a couple of family members who’d do it for a small fee then just take it apart.

Well the OP could report it as fly tipping then.

The council will remove it and hopefully there's evidence in there about who it belongs to and they'll be prosecuted and heavily fined.

Are you in England? The council in my area will have nothing to do with anything on private land. Farmers have to sort out fly tipping themselves

There's nothing to lose by putting it on Facebook or Gumtree so do that today while you think of other options and if you haven't already get a sturdy chain for the gate

Either pay the £900 or drag it out your field and leave on the road/verge and deny all knowledge.

IncompleteSenten · 19/05/2022 07:17

I would pay to have it towed to outside his house and make it his problem.

Even if it would cost me the same as to have it towed to a scrap yard.

Tulips21 · 19/05/2022 07:31

Report to council as Fly tipping.
If that doesnt work, advertise on all selling sites and social media as free to take.
If that doesnt work, I would be seeing CAB and possibly be taking the family member to court

DifficultBloodyWoman · 19/05/2022 07:35

Contact Top Gear or The Grand Tour?

Dismantle it in stages and leave more of it on family member’s drive each week?

Tell family member to cough up £900 for professional removal?

Ummmm there's a lot to unpack here. This is your real issue.

LoonyLurcher · 19/05/2022 08:59

Lots to unpick. It’s a very messy situation all round and causing lots of stress.

I’ve spoken to the council, they won’t touch it.
I’ve spoken to caravan breakers, they won’t touch it as it can’t be towed, and it would need a flat bed truck or long trailer as it’s so big.
I’ve spoken to odd job men, they won’t touch it as they don’t have the means to move something this size.

If it was smaller and not the monstrosity it is we would have more options, but because it’s so big (double axle, maybe 30 foot?) we’re stumped.

FM has form for this kind of stuff, but this one takes the prize. If he wasn’t going through the drunk driving stuff I would be tempted to go down the small claims route.
Maybe once that’s out of the way he’ll be more receptive to dismantling and arranging for it to be taken away.

Have googled, it’s a 26 foot caravan.
A bit like this….but broken.

@JuneOsborne are you kidding? A skip would by a few hundred pounds and the OP does all the work?
If putting it on Facebook or free cycle or whatever doesn't work I'd get all the family members to contribute to the £900 to get it removed. Then try and get the guy responsible to pay back (Though I don't see how having no licence prevents him from dealing with it) the money but if that's unlikely at least you are not solely stuck with paying and the family animosity towards him may actually have some effect.

IncompleteSenten · 19/05/2022 10:43

Why do you give a shot about the drink driving stuff? You should go down the small claims route.

I would certainly be making zero allowances for a drunk driver even if they didn't have a history of being a twat.

They've not given a shit about you have they? Or the fact they could have killed someone while drink driving.

I don't think you need to care that he's currently rightly facing the consequences of choosing to drive while drunk.

Alright next option, does he live with you? If so, then off to the caravan he goes. I'm serious.
