Things disguised as healthy...

A light hearted post but what are some things that are portrayed as healthy but aren't really ? My list is as follows...

Flavoured water
Most yoghurts
Yoghurt coated raisins
Most cereals
Fruit juices

Obviously we need to live a little but give us some that yiu think are purely just marketed to reel us in

Protein shakes and smoothies. Just eat food.

marshmallowmamma · 15/05/2022 21:15

Absolutely!!! I often think this too!!

What is unhealthy about flavoured water?

I'll say smoothies due to the sugar content.

HeadToToesNo · 15/05/2022 21:17

'Diet' or 'low fat' anything - just have the real unadulterated thing but less of it.

Comedycook · 15/05/2022 21:17

Muesli

marshmallowmamma · 15/05/2022 21:18

@BobLep0nge it's not that they are unhealthy but fizzy flavoured water is no better than Diet Coke etc. All artificial sweetener. As I say we need to live a little but it's being mindful that things aren't always as they seem

Margarines are another example

FlickyCrumble · 15/05/2022 21:25

I came here to say Yogurt. But also how the sugar in all cereals is very similar whether your eating bran flakes or coco pops! It’s shocking.

BreakorMake · 15/05/2022 21:28

I think I am going to have to live on a bowl of rice now. Been diagnosed with early kidney disease, so low salt, low protein. I have pre diabetes, a bit to go for the real thing, but I need to watch my sugar/carb intake. And my lipids are borderline also, so no saturated fats like my lovely butter anymore. I'm going to try as it's a wake up call now.

So I now look at labels. Honestly practically EVERYTHING has salt, even sweet things, and as for sugar! Oh and sat fats, no more cake for a while....

I don't and never did eat takeaways, crisps, chips, fried foods, but loved a few squares of choc with tea before bed, baaaad me! So I need to see a dietician to figure out what I'm doing wrong and what I can bloody well eat now! I'm sure I'll be put wise to the things that look ok but are not in fact ok at all, despite me not eating processed food, and cooking fresh at home. Hate it, hate it. And I don't need to lose weight either!

The name of flavoured water is hilarious, as are people's idea of what it is. They assume that it's water that has a tiny bit of something added to it to make it taste nice but somehow magically that doesn't mean it has any sugar or anything bad in it Grin when really any drink is just flavoured water, that's literally what soft drinks are. Something marketed as flavoured water has just as much sugar, sweetener, acid etc in it as the next soft drink on the shelf.

Smoothies is a weird one, especially feeding them to kids. I love a smoothie but it's just sugar again, it's not the same thing as eating an actual piece of fruit.

It's bollocks though anyway in any case, the idea that any food is healthy or unhealthy, you have to take it in the context of an entire diet.

BertieBotts · 15/05/2022 21:33

Wraps, magically more healthy than a sandwich even when they have the exact same filling.

Reluctantadult · 15/05/2022 21:35

Fromage frais marketed for kids, like petit filous. So much sugar!

Neveranynamesleft · 15/05/2022 21:41

Cereal bars. Awful things. May as well just have a packet of custard creams.

Snoken · 15/05/2022 22:14

It’s not all about the sugar content though. Sure, cereal bars and custard creams or bran flakes and coco pops may have similar sugar content, but bars and bran flakes contain so much more fibre which is good for our gut health. Not saying, especially cereal bars, are great, but they are a lot better than custard creams.

SuePerb7 · 15/05/2022 22:15

Fry Light, any slimming world followers will have this pushed at every meeting but the state of your pans after using it, imagine what it’s doing to your insides!

MiddleNameJane · 15/05/2022 22:19

Yoyo bears and fruit bars made of squished up raisins/dates/apples. They're pushed at parents as a wholesome option because they're fruit-based, but are so sticky and bad for teeth. Would rather my dc (and I!) had a KitKat or something tbh. Tastier and cheaper.

sHREDDIES19 · 15/05/2022 22:34

Skimmed or semi milk, margarine, low fat shite pumped full of god knows what. Yeah it might have fewer calories but it’s processed to within an inch of its life!

HailAdrian · 15/05/2022 22:39

What's wrong with smoothies? They're just blended fruit, aren't they?

MoltenLasagne · 15/05/2022 22:45

I used to get banana chips as I thought they were a healthy alternative to crisps or chocolate. Haha so so wrong! I should have had a bag of walkers and a kitkat instead...
