Spain holiday - cash or card?

HforHavana · 15/05/2022 19:33

Has anyone been to Spain on holiday recently (after covid)? We are going next month and usually take cash, but not sure if things have changed since covid with places preferring card like over here.
We are going to Benalmadena if that helpsSmile

I'd always take a mixture

We were in Spain last month and forgot we even took euros until the last day. Everywhere is contactless as a preference I found.

Blossomtoes · 15/05/2022 19:36

Both. We paid for most things by card but a few places only accepted cash. We used about €100 in cash in a week, the rest went on a card.

I live in Spain and can't think of anywhere around me that doesn't take cards. Just bear in mind that most ATMs will charge you around 7 euros to take out cash from a non-euro account. So for safety and simplicity purposes I'd stick to cards – and put it on a multi-currency card so you're not racking up exchange charges.

I was there last week and used contactless Monzo card for everything except tips. Make sure you click the 'pay in euros' button

We were in Fuengirola 3 years ago and the shift to cards was well on it's way then.

Just make sure you understand the charges your card makes and preferably get a Starling card or similar.

Saves a fortune compared with some banks charge for debit cards or accepting the shops exchange rate to pay in pounds.

Notdoingthis · 15/05/2022 19:59

We got a Caxton prepaid card. Worked really well and the exchange rate was better too.

We were in Spain last month.

Took most of our Euros on a Post Office card and a small amount in cash for places that wouldn't accept cards.

Nearly everywhere accepted cards, but it was good to have back up just in case.

You should be given the choice between paying in € or £ on a card. Pick € as our banks’ exchange rate is better
