London visit

Going to book the train into London for a couple of days in July with two children. Live absolutely nowhere near London and have only been twice (a long time ago) any suggestions where to stay so that we can travel easily from Euston station and do the usual (over priced) tourist stuff! Any help gratefully received

How old are the children, do you have a budget for the hotel and trips out, will it be weekdays or the weekend. You dont need to pay overpriced attractions, there is plenty of stuff to do for free or cheap, what sort of things do you all like doing. Its good to have a list of essential things to do or see and we xan help you plan a trip. If youre arriving at Euston you could stay in one of the nearby premier inns or travelodge's.

Kids ages? Budget?

pitterpatterrain · 15/05/2022 15:45

Agree with Blankets - Premier inn is always good as nicely standard

The big museums are all free, and loads you can just walk and enjoy

Get a Thames Clipper from Battersea Power Station to The Tower of London, you just pay with contactless its not much more than the train. The boats have a bar/snacks and go right by the Houses of Parliament, London Eye etc - its so beautiful (if the weather is onside)

Also I haven’t been yet but want to go: The Sky Garden, its at the top of a skyscraper, free but you have to book a slot

Premier Inn at Euston. Go on the 2for1 website for discounts on attractions.

Are you sure? We got the boat bus from London Bridge to Tate Britain (one in Pimlico). The cost didn't come out of the daily travel limit, and it was about £10 -15 quid one way. I was well pissed off!

Justjoinedforthis · 15/05/2022 15:53

Hmm I though it was about 8 quid, and yes separate to the travelcard limit annoyingly. But way cheaper than the cruises which are about 30 quid minimum

Justjoinedforthis · 15/05/2022 15:55

Just checked they are about 6 or 7 quid for adult single.

We've booked the double tree Hilton in Kensington as it's waking distance to the natural history museum which is free. We'll do an open top bus tour as the main paid activity, and possibly a boat trip/London Eye so they can see the city.

We also love going around Hamleys as there are so many demos going on and you don't need to spend money. Covent Garden is wonderful for street performers too and again, no cost!

The uber boat is about £15 return, its the cheapest way to get the boat and Wowcher always have river cruise deals

This this this!!

We did this recently after a MN recommendation. It was fabulous. :)

Jumpking · 15/05/2022 17:06

We recently did a city cruises tour on bogof. £18 for us both return.

Depending on the age of your children, I can't recommend Diana's playground highly enough for the under 12s

That's a great resource @BlanketsBanned - thanks for the link Smile

Unless you really want the open top part of it, just use ordinary red London buses and ride upstairs. The No.11 and No.15 take in most of the main tourist sights. You can get on and off as often as you like; the amount you pay won't exceed a daily limit. See www.tfl.gov.uk for fares, ways to pay, routes and route maps.

The bus tours can be expensive and they dont always manage to finish the whole tour due to the traffic and the demonstrations. You are much better off with the normal buses.
