Migraines are hell, aren't they?

Bloody hell. I haven't had one in over a year and forgot how horrific they are.

It started if yesterday morning when I woke up. I felt weird. Like a type of anger was bubbling Confused I'm never angry! I just read this is really common before a migraine

Then my sight went in my left eye, and my left arm went numb! I looked at my arm and it was as if it wasn't attached to my body. Again, aura and very common with nightmares.

My speech went slurred! And I couldn't make any sense typing or speaking. I couldn't get my words out

My eyesight in the eye that could see then went into daggers. It was so strange. Then the pain. My God the pain.

How can something that changes your mood, speech and visual disturbances, pain and loss of sight be so simple as a 'migraine'?

Hideous things. I'm surprised if you put someone on an MRI, you wouldn't see it happening as they're so symptom packed. What is actually causing it?

Only thing that helps a little is salty food and coke.

Hmm yes they are, but unless you’ve been diagnosed with migraines and the above is their normal MO - you should get yourself checked out for a minor stroke.

sleepymum50 · 14/05/2022 12:02

I use wet flannels and cold packs to help with the pain. Yes I agree the pain of a bad migraine is horrific.

hopesaysnope · 14/05/2022 12:03

@IrisVersicolor I was diagnosed in 2018 with Hymaplegic (excuse spelling) migraines

But yes, certain types of migraine are associated with lesions on MRI scans.

IrisVersicolor · 14/05/2022 12:04

So this is normal for you, ok.

and sumatriptan?

they’re awful, sympathies to you, hope you feel better soon!

IrisVersicolor · 14/05/2022 12:06

I just drink loads of water, use Tiger balm to rub on the painful areas, take Migraleve and lie down in a dark room.

Have you tried Triptans?

hopesaysnope · 14/05/2022 12:07

No I've not tried sumatriptan or Triptans

I'll have to have a look? Are they over the counter?

Yes!! I feel like I'm getting one this morning, hellish.

IrisVersicolor · 14/05/2022 12:09

I think you have to get them on prescription.

ErmineAndPearls · 14/05/2022 12:10

You need a prescription. I take a soluble painkiller at the first sign and lie down in the dark with a cold gel face mask thing

Inthesameboatatmo · 14/05/2022 12:13

They are horrid things op and render me absolutely useless. If I'm lucky I will have an aura first so I know what's coming. The only thing that works for me is take 2 paracetamol and 2 ibuprofen together. It's the only thing that stops it in its tracks if it's a bad one. I need a bolus dose of any medication because the swelling is bad the medication can't pass through the vessels. So even though it seems a lot only a small percentage gets through. And the combo makes it faster acting.

northernstars · 14/05/2022 12:17

Sorry you're suffering. Do you know what might have triggered it after so long? For me it's Zomig with painkillers; coke or coffee; ice pack and sleep. Sympathies.

bellac11 · 14/05/2022 12:18

You can buy sumatriptan online but its expensive. I hav to do this if I realise Ive run out as it takes so long to get the repeat prescription, then over to the chemist, then wait for them. I cant do without it

It feels like brain damage to me to be honest, I get shaky, slurrey, uncoordinated, awful pain, have to close eyes, weak

Terrible things

Sewaccidentprone · 14/05/2022 12:20

I sympathise.

i’ve had migraines since my mid 20’s - every month the week before my period.

tried all sorts, inc acupuncture, triptans etc.

the only thing that helped was sumatriptan, procloperazine and otc ibuprofen and codeine from Boots. All taken as soon symptoms started.

I still get migraines, though not as frequently or as severe, though i get a migraine ‘hangover’ which lasts a few days.

it’s a complete pita.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 14/05/2022 12:23

Ginger ale does wonders for the nausea.

I don’t mean to be rude but if you’ve been diagnosed with migraines then you should be taking something for them!

You can buy sumatriptan over the counter (expensive), via doctors prescription or cheapest option is to get them in online pharmacies where you can get bigger boxes. Worth a try to see if they help you

BritInAus · 14/05/2022 14:09

Sumatriptan changed my life! My symptoms are identical to yours. Suggest chat with GP.

Heartoverheadheadoverheart · 14/05/2022 14:22

I feel for you. I too suffer with migraines with aura. I can't see, I can't talk properly, I can see something simple but not be able to remember what it is called, like I might look at a tap but not know it is called a tap, I am sometimes sick, at least nauseous and then I get a headache. Then I spend ages just trying to recover from it as it leaves me feeling so drained.

I go through months and months of having them every few days and then I have a spell where I only get them occasionally and this continues. Currently trying yet another medication. The medication also used for epilepsy makes them so much worse.

The worst thing I think is never knowing when it is going to happen. Who wants to drive out on their own with their kids for a day and then you are stuck in the middle of no where with children and you cannot function. It's terrifying.

I really hope you find something that works for you soon. You aren't alone. Take care.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 14/05/2022 14:23

Horrible aren't they. Started getting them in my early teens so 35 years or so. My 10 year old daughter had her first attack this week :( prayiy she doesn't suffer like I did. Don't get them as often now thankfully. I find carbs and crisps help when I feel an attack coming on.
