English Pottery Detective needed

I am trying to track down an artist that I met at a craft fair in Yorkshire Circa 2003.

It's a long shot, I know but would anyone be able to help?
They sold pottery, and both my friend and I bought jugs. Unfortunately she has broken hers and would love to replace it with a similar item from the same artist. I have attached the images of my jug in the hopes someone may recognise it!
I can't decipher the signature on the bottom :(
Many thanks in advance

I’d suggest starting a new thread titled ‘Pottery Detective needed, Yorkshire’ as that may attract somebody more likely to help.

potterydetective · 14/05/2022 10:22

Thanks, I will get MNHQ to edit title. I don't know if the artist was from Yorkshire, though. It's signed with a name, then 'England'

Could the signature be 'C Lee'? There is a ceramic artist called Charlotte Lee.

I'd honestly contact the local paper to that part of Yorkshire, most local papers are always looking for stories like this. It gets people talking.

Love the pottery!

potterydetective · 14/05/2022 10:43

Thanks all. Its a beautiful practical jug😍

All the jugs were glazed bright red inside, and predominately black with a bold abstract flower/shape theme.

Just wish i could figure out the signature!

Was it one at the showground?
They might have archived material of who was there.

BestIsWest · 14/05/2022 11:00

You could contact these people and see if they recognise it www.northern-potters.co.uk/contact/

I have spent 45 mins lost in google. I think the first name is Alex but am not the wiser to the surname!

I think the surname is Lee - there is a potter called Alex Lee if you google!

Sharpkat · 14/05/2022 11:08

I have tried Alex Lee but could not find one with similar pieces.

ElenaSt · 14/05/2022 11:27

These would be good to contact -

It might be worth contacting thé organisers or thé place itself and asking them. I did this after not buying something at a National Trust craft fair and got the détails that way. Not a jug, but pottery dragons

potterydetective · 14/05/2022 11:42

Wow.... thanks so much. I have contacted northern potters, and also posted on a few pottery forums.

I think the craft fair was at Newby Hall, but not 100% sure (I went to a few that year!)

Alex Lee seems to be based in California? And unfortunately I am not on Facebook ....will get in touch with centre of ceramic art.

@potterydetective I know this was a while ago, and you might have solved the mystery but I was reminded of it today when browsing a vintage ceramics store - I saw a bowl in a very similar design by the artist Lorna Jackson Currie. 'Jackson Currie' is a possible for that signature and Google brings up these jugs for her sold in Leeds - they are very lovely!

It's gorgeous, isn't it? Unfortunately the bowl I saw today was a bit out of my price range (it was enormous) but I'll be on the look out for LJC's work in future.

potterydetective · 16/08/2022 14:01

Oh wow!!!!! @Antarcticant thankyou SO much! Just popped back to this thread, and bingo, that is most definitely the artist. Can I ask what vintage store it was?

titchy · 16/08/2022 14:13

Despinetta gave you a link to her online store.

Nice style!

Antarcticant · 16/08/2022 16:16

Really pleased you've popped back and seen my update, OP. It was a shop in the Byram Arcade in Huddersfield - I didn't see any other pieces by LJC there but I recognised the design straight away from your thread and helpfully they had a card next to it with details of the artist. The Byram Arcade has some lovely niche, art/vintage shops and is very convenient for the bus station.
