Look like maybugs.

SheWoreYellow · 14/05/2022 10:08

What do the look like from the other way? I mean can you flip it over and get a photo of its back?

Northernsoullover · 14/05/2022 10:09

As someone who lived in the canaries they sure look like cockroaches. Sorry OP

Newfluff · 14/05/2022 10:09

When I was a kid they (like glow worms) were common. I love seeing them, can't remember the last time I did.

MrsIronfoundersson · 14/05/2022 10:10

Cockchafer I think - does it have fanned antennae?

Newfluff · 14/05/2022 10:10

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockchafer

Apparently they are pests

MrsIronfoundersson · 14/05/2022 10:11

Also known as maybug as Newfluff said.

Saisong · 14/05/2022 10:12

They are Maybugs! Lots around now, because it's may! They fly at night around the tops of trees to find mates. They are very clumsy, are attracted to light, and you don't want to get one stuck in your hair (bitter experience).

Wait until the stag beetles start flying ...

Redbluelellow · 14/05/2022 10:13

Omg thought the cat had killed it but its alive more pics

Cockchafers are horrible things. Their great fat grubs (chafer grubs) eat the roots of plants and they are a nightmare in plant pots.

Redbluelellow · 14/05/2022 11:20

Husband said when he heard it flying very very noisy does that sound like maybug

OwlNoisesInHerFace · 14/05/2022 11:30

Yes it's a maybug/cockchafer. Very noisy when flying and very clumsy, they basically just bumble around in the air until they hit something. We had one in the bathroom once, made such a racket flying against the window.

amusedbush · 14/05/2022 12:10

Apparently I’m the only childish person laughing at ‘cockchafer’ Grin

msbevvy · 14/05/2022 12:19

This is a cockchafer, I think. It made a hell of a noise flying around our caravan last year.

Its the b52 of the bug world.
In my teenage years, while on holiday in France, I pinged one across our lawn with a tennis racquet. It makes a satisfying sound when it hits. I didn't kill it, just rerouted it.
This is not something I would recommend doing now.

That sounds really satisfying 😆

I'm honestly a wildlife lover, but I'd love to see how far I could make one fly with a tennis racket.

Dearmariacountmein · 15/05/2022 09:42

Maybug. We have loads of them at the moment last week I or may not have been hiding under the duvet screaming whilst my DP removed one from the bedroom. Horrid things I could also hear them tapping at our windows last night trying to get in to the light.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 15/05/2022 09:51

If it helps you see them differently, they are a scarab beetle, really! There are a few kinds in the UK and the Maybug, cockchafer is the biggest.

See the pictures above, they have funny furry faces, quite cute, and are about as aerodynamic as a Wellington boot 😍☺️

Daisychainsandglitter · 15/05/2022 09:57

Definitely maybug/cockchafer. They used to be common in Suffolk where I grew up. Make a loud noise as well.
We used to call them Billywitches I'm not sure why and we used to say if they got stuck in your hair you'd have to cut it off.
I live in Birmingham suburbs now and haven't seen one in years thankfully.

bluejelly · 15/05/2022 10:05

Please don't kill them. They are not harmful and if they are in your garden really not a problem

LightSpeeds · 15/05/2022 10:05

Cockchafers (sounds painful). We get them here too - not every year though. Terrifying things when they're buzzing around you. No sense of direction, seem blind, but harmless, apparently (fright-factor aside)!
