Take a note into any bank and exchange it for coins? Or do you need to be a customer? I’m doing a jumble sale stall and thinking where to get change without having yo go to an arcade and use the change machines!

I think you will have to be a customer. Who are you doing the jumble sale satll on behalf of - a charity or personal? If a charity get the treasurer to sort this out. If personal, use your own bank.

Thank you!

Post office might too. My bank branch doesn't take cash over the counter now so I have to pay in at PO. The website says main branches will change notes for coins and smaller ones might if they have enough for their own needs.

Well just an update in case there are any other cash seekers out there:
hSBC - didn’t carry cash in that branch, said try post office
nationwide - asked if I had an account (i do), then grudgingly parted with ten pound coins saying they don’t usually give change
Post Office - told me I needed an account with them.

off to buy four different chewing gums from four different corner shops!

When I need coins I go to the post office to withdraw money and ask for it in coins, they're always happy to do this (I need cash for the dc to go to youth club every week, it's such a pain trying to get them now!).

WreckTangled · 21/05/2022 06:54

I bank with RBS and First direct.

Justjoinedforthis · 21/05/2022 06:59

Ooh I should have tried that, thanks for that.

yes of course.
Just go in and ask for £5 of 10ps or whatever.
In some places you have to order more than one bag the day before.

Post Office will do it too.

No need at all to be a customer

steppemum · 21/05/2022 07:34

sorry, but the Post Office is talking rubbish,
I have often walked in and asked for coins.
Given them a £10 and got £10 in £1 coins.

No need at all for an account.
How strange.

Seasidegrandma · 21/05/2022 07:51

The Post Office rules state that they will only give £10 worth of coins to ensure that you are not money laundering. Even if I withdraw the money from my account at the counter my post office will only begrudgingly give me £10, though most times they say they don't have enough change and will only give me £5.
