Just settling down for a wild night of sewing. I can work out where most of the badges go, but I don't know how you categorise this one and Google's no help. One of you must know.

So much sewing! and then they all have to come off and be sewn again onto the camp blanket. It really is a form of torture!

Or cut the up entire shirt/jumper and sew a whole sleeve onto a blanket with a sewing machine Wink

InMySpareTime · 12/05/2022 20:45

Our Cub/scout leaders had the genius idea to offer to sew badges on for the kids, at £1 a badge. They managed to fundraise enough for their Jamboree place and a bit extra to subsidise a treat for the scouts on the trip. Plus, parents who did their own sewing felt they were saving £1 a badge so didn't begrudge the sewing so much.

I've put DCs through beavers, rainbows, cubs, brownies, scouts, explorers and currently have a young leader DC.

DH is group secretary so gets badges periodically too. I have sewn on a lot of badges.

toomuchlaundry · 12/05/2022 20:50

When I sewed DS's badges on I would do it neatly with matching thread (sad!). When DS did it he would do it with random coloured thread and would look like a large spider's web. Guess which method was easiest to unpick when moving badges to next section or his blanket

toomuchlaundry · 12/05/2022 20:50

Have you sewn all the way through the jumper yet!

Silverswirl · 12/05/2022 20:52

I have twins in cubs. Gone through the beaver sewing hell and unpicking.
Vowed to never sit there sewing and having a nightmare with it all evening again.
researched badge glue. It’s fabulous. Works a charm and they don’t remotely fall off. 40 badges done in 15 minutes.
If I need to remove any in future to put elsewhere and I can’t get them off, I will simply buy new ones from the cubs website. Job done.
The only one I’m sewing is the jubilee one because I think that one will be nice to keep and I’m not sure if I will be able to buy in future years

toomuchlaundry · 12/05/2022 20:54

Don't glue the Chief Scout Award badges @Silverswirl you can't get replacement ones of those on scout shop.

reluctantbrit · 12/05/2022 20:58

DD is an Explorer now but when she moved sections or needed a new Scout shirt I brought everything to the dry cleaners and paid happily someone to sew the bl**dy things on.
Extra badges etc ended up on her camp blanket.

For Brownies and her Pony Club jumper we glued everything on.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/05/2022 20:59

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/05/2022 20:18

What?!

WHAT?!!!!

I'm meant to unpick the bastard things and sew them onto something else when he goes to cubs?!!

Not all of them!

The District badge, pack name tape and world scout emblem (the round purple one)
the highest stage of staged activity badges
the highest number joining in badges..

all badges that don’t need to go up onto a new uniform.go to their final resting place camp blanket, where they are glued. Both DC have gone from Beavers to Scouts. I’ve sewn an awful lot of badges on in my time. Top tip - get the biggest shirt/Jumper you can get away with, it’s got to fit for 2-3 years.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 12/05/2022 20:59

Our local Facebook had a teenager offering to sew badges on for 50p per badge - sounds like she was on to a winning idea.

toomuchlaundry · 12/05/2022 21:01

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 they were probably raising money for their trip to the World Scout Jamboree!

Top tip for sleeve badges... put a bottle down the sleeve. It makes it a lot easier (and you don't sew the sleeve together!)

Amazing, thank you!
I too am in for a wild night of sewing after DC came home from Beavers with 7 badges this week.

confusedofengland · 12/05/2022 21:19

I have 3 Dses - 2 in Scouts, 1 in Cubs. Imagine all the sewing I have to do!

And to make matters worse, DS1 has now outgrown the shirt I bought him to last for the whole of Scouts (he is now taller than me at 13, I did not foresee this at all 😬) & needs about 25 badges transferring to a new shirt 😭

Ionianprincess · 12/05/2022 21:29

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/05/2022 20:13

I did not know about this camp blanket business.

I am working on a conspiracy theory about cubs/brownies being a diabolical scheme to keep women back in the 1950s. I note Baden Powell was a Tory.

Bottle down the sleeve is a great tip though!

Absolutely agree about the conspiracy theory! I couldn’t believe that it hadn’t changed since I was a brownie.

Fuck sewing them onto blankets - what do they need a camp blanket for (beaver virgin here)

Will try the bottle idea next time. Save the badges being spattered in my blood 🙄

DrCoconut · 12/05/2022 21:38

Surely you leave badges on the relevant top and keep it as a memento of your time in beavers/cubs/whatever? I've never heard of putting anything other than blanket badges on blankets. DS2 just got his silver award <not bragging too much 😀>. He has additional needs and it was such a big thing to him. He's gone up to scouts now and his cubs badges are staying where they are!

wonkylegs · 12/05/2022 21:39

DS2 expressed an interest in learning to sew last weekend and so I jumped at the chance. He's taken to it fantastically. He's 6 and just started Beavers so I'm looking forward to a little more proficiency and then I'll set him off.
His brother is now at Adventure scouts and both also do swimming so I've had my fill of badges over the years.

toomuchlaundry · 12/05/2022 21:42

@DrCoconut his silver award badge should go on his scout shirt and activity badges, district badge etc should be transferred up too

DD (Explorer now) takes her camp blanket with her to every camp. Her method of keeping warm in a tent is pyjama, onesie, 4 season sleeping bag and camp blanket. Between September and April she adds a beanie and thick socks.

She is a Young Leader and helps with the Beavers. The leader asked every YL to bring in their camp blankets and several had everything on it from Beavers to Scouts and all kind of extra badges on top.

A lot easier to keep one blanket as a keepsake than several jumpers and shirts.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/05/2022 22:18

It looks like I'm in for two of these badges, one for each organisation. Plus the DCs getting one each. Still updating the new Scout shirt. Catching up on camp blankets... DCs have been earning badges since birth...

Now sitting around during kids' activities is no longer deemed to be a major health hazard, I take my sewing kit, clothing/ blankets and get about 50 minutes sewing in during one of their other sports. It's surprisingly productive and compares well against 40 minutes in the house before turning around.

Racingadmin · 12/05/2022 22:34

I hate sewing and so was only ever going to see the bloody things on once

However - once they leave the section I cut up the sweater / jumper and then sew the whole thing onto their scout blanket
Ie a complete sleeve or front . I've done this for both dd and ds

So ds (now aged 20) camp blanket has sleeves and fronts from beavers, cubs and sea scouts plus swimming badges that were originally sewn onto one of his baby muslins, and then various badges that we have bought from on holidays ie US state park patches .

His camp blanket is now an amazing chronicle of his childhood that means much more to me that him Blush

Cubs platinum jubilee badge. Where does the fucker go?

Don't glue the Chief Scout Award badges @Silverswirl you can't get replacement ones of those on scout shop.

Or the stage and occasion badges. If they get the next one up/when the occasion badge changes the following year, you need to unpick and replace with the new one.

DD1 is in the process of moving up to cubs and DD2 will be invested into beavers in a couple of weeks. I'm dreading the badge swapping! The camp blanket can be done as and when, but both DCs will want their uniforms sorted immediately (understandably). I have already been refusing to sew on DD1's beavers badges for some weeks now as it isn't worth it for the time she has left. I have become quite quick at sewing now though, between all the scouts, swimming, and gymnastics badges.

Sunnysidegold · 13/05/2022 06:02

My niece's cub leader charges 50p to sew on badges. It's amazing. Money goes to funds. Leave your jumper at the end of the session and pick it up the following week. My sister in law saves up a load and then sends them all in.

I see my kids' badges on when I have dead time - waiting to pick up from clubs, watching swimming lessons, etc.

I have heard that badge glue isn't great btw.

BalloonsAndWhistles · 13/05/2022 06:30

Can you cheat and just buy more than one of each badge to save the unpicking?

Unless you’re a leader, you can’t buy a lot of badges / can’t officially buy activity badges from the Scout Shops website, only badges that you don’t have to earn. You need your scouts membership number to check out. Check out eBay though! There’s quite a lot on there.

I'm a cub leader, and I will always order extra badges for parents who don't want to resew badges. They do have to pay for them, but I'm happy to add to a badge order on their behalf.

I love camp blankets! They make a lovely memento of their time in scouts, and are also very useful for camp! Mine is a poncho style, and lovely and warm. Several of my leaders have blankets going back to when they were cubs.

If you've glued badges onto a uniform and want to transfer them to a blanket, just cut out the whole section with the badges, and sew the whole thing to the blanket.

If your Cub has his Skills challenge badge (hexagonal red ones) he/she can sew on a badge. If they havn’t, then get them to do it, and will count towards it.
When I was a Cub leader, I loved seeing wonky badges that had obviously been sewn on with massive stitches by the Cub and not their parent.

Tim Peake has his in the right place.

I remember a story in the brownies handbook/magazine/something, maybe at the time of the Silver Jubilee in 1977.

About a Brownie who was sure she'd be picked to meet the Queen because of all her badges, but they picked another girl 'badges sewn on anywhere and great big stitches too'. Then the Mum explained that 'Jill's mothers blind' and how the girl had to help out massively at home etc.

hat has stuck with me for 45 years.
