I had my first ever experience of a man waving at me to help me park

In my own driveway Confused The man had come to do some work on the rear of my car so he asked me to drive forwards onto my drive, so the back end was pointing towards the road. As I did so he walked to the front end of my car and waved me in. Why do they DO this?! I was so tempted to ask him if he'd have done that if I was a man Hmm It's my drive, I park on it several times a day, I know where it ends and I know the size of my car. And even if I was struggling, my car has parking sensors on both ends anyway!
Urgh.

My Dad does this, but he has far more scratches from rubbish parking on his current 18 month old car than I have had in 28 years of driving.

A friend of mine was telling me her elderly Dad was compulsive about doing this. She found it really embarrassing. One time when she was with him and he did it the young woman got out of her car and said 'fuck off old timer'. He was very shocked.

Grin excellent!

Tothepoint99 · 13/05/2022 10:38

I surprised my friend's new boyfriend last weekend by reversing off MY OWN drive with cars either side parked on the pavement. First time I'd ever met him! He said I was expecting you take ages!!! How on earth to do they we get by without them!?!?

I’ve recently bought myself a camper van after years of driving a tiny two seater. Took it round to show my parents and had to parallel park on the road outside their house which is on a bend and also a slope so a bit of a bugger. Parked perfectly, my dad came out and said ‘ooh did you manage to do that?’ He seemed less than impressed at my ‘no dad, the dog did!’.

ILoveWillSmith · 13/05/2022 10:54

I had a bloke say to me once 'that was the best parallel parking I've ever seen......for a woman!' aww thanks - tosser!

EvilPea · 13/05/2022 11:02

this makes me full of rage. I can fucking park!! Piss off. If I need help I will ask

I drive a lot of big stuff for work, I’ve had really funny reactions from men.
men in range rovers particularly shit themselves when I park next to them.
others have congratulated me on my parking skills.
all funny reactions they wouldn’t give if it was a man.

LindaEllen · 13/05/2022 11:09

There is a man like this at a hobby I attend. He will always wave me out of my parking space if he happens to be leaving at the same time. I wonder what he thinks I do when he's NOT there? Wait until next meeting because I just can't pull out of a space alone?

WaltzingToWalsingham · 13/05/2022 11:16

This happens to me quite regularly, but I must admit I find it very helpful because I am genuinely terrible at parking, and a very nervous driver in general. It must show on my face or in all the dents in my car because men are always waving me in or out.

orangeisthenewpuce · 13/05/2022 11:33

My parking is so shit I'd have been very happy if he (or anyone) would help me. Wouldn't upset me at all.

AstroSurf · 13/05/2022 11:40

It happens to men too. This isn't a sexist thing but a busybody thing.

Sniffypete · 13/05/2022 16:30

I only ever reverse into spaces, and i did this the other day in a supermarket carpark next to a man in a van. Didn't realise that he was sitting in it. I just swung the car in in one go as usual and when I got out he said wow that's good parking for a woman!

Handyweatherstation · 13/05/2022 16:50

I always back into spaces too and have done this many, many times and without any issues. There were two ladies I worked for, with weekly visits for several years, and with both of them if their sons were there they always insisted on guiding me in. It was as if they thought I'd never been there before, lots of arm waving and shouting instructions. So distracting and annoying. I know how to use the mirrors, chaps!

They don’t just do it when you’re actually driving…
was doing driving practice with my DS. Just before his test and I decided to push him. Took him to a busy supermarket and we drove around car park with me saying “ reverse into that spot”, “now go nose first into that spot” …I thought it was a good bit of practice for real world given there’s cars coming in all direction and people randomly popping behind. He was doing very well..but then some stupid old guy decided to step into a space that he was driving nose into and start directing him. DS had a car behind him within a few seconds, as you do, and I just wanted him not to be rushed, take his time…and this stupid man was literally standing in front of him in space telling him to reverse back up, go forwards.
I wound down my window ( obviously couldn’t get out car as I was “instructor” ) and said please go away, he’s practicing. Guy doesn’t stop, shouts back something about “needing help”. My DS is now getting flustered by demented man. He applies the brakes and hazard lights without saying anything to me. Gets out the car and stretches himself to his full 6 foot 5 He then goes to car behind, apologises for keeping them waiting cos this random old guy is standing in the space trying to direct him and not moving out the way. He was about to then go over and ask the old guy to stop, but driver in car behind sticks his head out window and hollers at top of his lungs “get the fuck out of the way you old wanker and let them park”. My son just cracks up and says to old guy “well I was going to say it more politely but please just leave me alone “. Even then the guy was muttering “ needing help” as he walked off
I am more than a little inclined to think if DS had been doing same thing with his Dad , old geezer would not have interfered.

Justleaveitblankthen · 13/05/2022 17:25

I had a young white van man infront of me, both topping up at the petrol station.
"Hey luv, that's the wrong pump!! diesel is the black one!"
My car is run on petrol..
He was so convinced I was wrong, he had me doubting it myself.. and I've been topping it up every other day for two years now 🧐

TrainspottingWelsh · 13/05/2022 20:09

I’ve got a horse box and a hgv license. And ime it’s always the shit male drivers that feel the need to barge in with their clearly unnecessary ‘help’.
I’ve only ever had other hgv drivers gesture in the same circumstances they do to each other, i.e whether you’re still clear behind or if some arsehole has driven or walked into your blind spot since you started your manoeuvre. Never to help when it’s just about driving/ spatial awareness. Because they know it’s skill, not a penis, that is required to drive a hgv.
No, it’s always Mr ‘85 manoeuvres to get my sedan in a space big enough for a bus even with sensors and a camera’ that feels the need to offer his moronic advice.

vipersnest1 · 14/05/2022 22:37

My DF directed me while I was reversing on the drive - into the wall at one side of the drive. Luckily the only damage was a dent to the rear bumper.
I'd give anything to have him back to do this again, despite the damage.

Pennox · 14/05/2022 22:42

The guys at the local car wash do this. It's really annoying. I used to let them get on with it and just drive where they wanted me to. But now I have a more expensive car and it has an immobiliser on it where you have to enter a sequence of buttons before you start the engine in order tombe able to put it into gear. They made me turn off the engine the first time I took it there and then wanted me to move forward. When I didn't immediately do so they all started telling and gesticulating. I turned the engine off, laughed at them, opened the door and beckoned them over where I explained quite slowly how Ghost immobilisers work. They have looked at me with more respect since and have stopped all the gesticulating, even when I go in the other little car.

Pennox · 14/05/2022 22:45

Yelling not telling.

Stressybetty · 14/05/2022 22:51

I had a man helping me reverse park at the tip last week. Didn't mind as he worked there and the spaces are a weird angle.

AnneElliott · 14/05/2022 23:02

I hate this! I had a bloke trying to tell me I could get through a space between a huge bin lorry and a van. I couldn't get through so just had to wait for the Jin lorry to move forward. Which I was fine to wait for.

But he kept waving and gesticulating and telling me I could get a bus through that space! Which no I actually couldn't and this is a £30k car which I assume I'm paying for if I damage it.

I had to be quite rude to get him to leave me alone.
