Maybe I'm too uptight

Or maybe it's just this man who gets on nerves, but:

He's a professional consultant we have in school three times a year. He spends a full day with us and 80% of that is with me on my own.

I imagine he thinks he's being charming/funny and others may think he is, but he makes my skin crawl.

Today he said to me "have you seen the guns on that teacher ?". A male teacher who is exceptionally well built, but I wouldn't dream of remarking on it in any context, let alone in a professional meeting with someone I only meet infrequently.

There are a number of reasons I'll be replacing him at the end if this year, but this may have been the final straw. Just me?

From that example only, yes I think you’re being a bit uptight.

I'd think he's a twat and very unprofessional to make comments about a staff member's body, regardless if it's a compliment or a criticism.

I don't think it's this one comment, I think there's just something you don't like about this man, so anything he says that's even slightly questionable might set you off. I understand, though. I've known people who just creep me out.

nearlyspringyay · 11/05/2022 13:46

Well it's very unprofessional. Depends on the back story.

Traumdeuter · 11/05/2022 13:48

Surprised at these replies. It is not appropriate to comment on a colleague’s physical appearance!

Absolutely. There are lots of these just slightly off comments. Lots of false modesty about his own physical appearance too.

So those who think it's me, "look at the legs on her..." Or is that different?

I need to log off MN today because the excuses being made for men are overwhelming.

OP - that comment alone would have had me going "WTF" and if it was me, I'd have said something like, "You know you can't say something like that right?!" It is beyond inappropriate. If he is making similar comments about himself, you, other colleagues and doing so every single time you see him.... well, it's amazing you've lasted as long as you have. How much power do you have over who the consultant is because I'd be ditching him asap.

ComtesseDeSpair · 11/05/2022 14:30

I wouldn’t do it myself but it’s not uncommon in our office for e.g. the Reception team to comment “ooh, have you seen the hot new IT guy??” or when the Facilities team are lifting boxes comment in their muscles or whatever. Has never been pulled up so whilst I might think it unprofessional I guess some people are just used to work environments like this and don’t realise others disagree.
