Short sighted glasses wearers - I have a question.

If you are short sighted and wear your glasses most of the time do you take them off to read?
My prescription is -3 5 and I have an astigmatism. My near vision has always been excellent.
I usually leave my glasses on all day but I take them off if I'm reading a book.
Lately though I feel like I need to take my glasses off to read small print on labels etc. Once my glasses are off I can still read tiny print.
I'm due at the optician soon so I'll ask there but I'm just wondering do other people have this issue? Is it age related- I'm 48.

I take mine off to read - despite having varifocals.

GenialHarryGr0ut · 10/05/2022 21:49

I take mine off to read.
Although when I was younger I didn't but as my eyes have changed it's easier to read a book or small print without them.

I do now have varifocals so I assume that the changes to my eyes are why I need to do this.

Yes, started taking my glasses off to read in my late 40's. Definitely an age thing.

I have to take mine off to read, it’s too blurry otherwise.

Eupraxia · 10/05/2022 21:53

I take mine off to read nowadays.

and when tweezering black hairs off my chin

Didn't used to. I think its age related. In 45 with -3.25 prescription

Tumbleweed101 · 10/05/2022 21:53

I have worn glasses from childhood and have always prefered reading with wearing them.

Tumbleweed101 · 10/05/2022 21:54

Without them .... autocorrect...

Fedupsotired · 10/05/2022 21:55

I agree it's age related! I'm -7.5 and it's only been in the last 6 months I've had to take them off. I'm late 40s

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 10/05/2022 21:55

No but I'd have to hold the book about 2 inches from my nose to actually be able to read 😄

Discovereads · 10/05/2022 21:55

Hmm. I have the opposite. Could read with no glasses as a child/teen but not since my twenties. But my prescription is much higher than yours.

devildeepbluesea · 10/05/2022 21:58

I’m too blind to take them off but I’ve got varifocs recently which have made a difference.
I’ve bought some cheapo reading glasses for home bargs which really help when I have my lenses in.
so I’m -6.00 but have reading glasses of +1.5-2.0 which redresses the balance a bit.

trilbydoll · 10/05/2022 21:58

I'm -8.5. I have always taken my glasses off to do things like pluck eyebrows, extract splinters etc. Like a pp, to read I would have to have my head touching the page!

Meredusoleil · 10/05/2022 21:59

This is why I refuse to wear my glasses all the time! Can't be bothered with the hassle of taking them off to read ecwry 2 minutes. But my prescription is only -1.25, so not too strong!

jaffacakesareepic · 10/05/2022 22:02

Its presbyopia which is age related, this is the age where people often buy reading glasses, these have a positive prescription. By taking off your glasses, which have a negative prescription you are in effect giving yourself a positive prescription so you dont need reading glasses.

You will be the person in the restaurant who czn read the menu still when everyone else has forgotten their reading glasses

Bikeybikeface · 10/05/2022 22:04

I am -4.75 and no, I leave them on.

stoneysongs · 10/05/2022 22:05

Yes it's an age thing and a right bloody pain. I need to either take them off or shove them a bit further down my nose. I need varifocals really but they are so expensive £500+ and my prescription has never once stayed the same. I now have contacts for short sight and then cheap half moon reading glasses which do the job fine and when at home have been known not to bother with the contacts and just stick the reading glasses on top of my normal glasses

Onthegrid · 10/05/2022 22:05

My prescription is about the same but I tend to wear contact lenses most of the time, by my mid forties I had to wear reading glasses on a very low prescription over the top for reading. Or take off my seeing glasses. Now in my 50s I have to do this in the supermarket to read the labels.

Even DH who had 20/20 vision now has reading specs, you can’t fight old age!

Take a look at Asda, they do fixed prices for frame and lenses even if the lenses are varifocals.

nearlyspringyay · 10/05/2022 22:07

I'm -3.5 in contacts I'm fine but in my glasses I have to take them off to read up close.

ToastedCrumpetwithCheese · 10/05/2022 22:07

Nope, I wear my glasses all the time (mid-40s), looks like I've got reading glasses/varifocals in my future though Grin

Chishnfips · 10/05/2022 22:07

I can read with them on but I prefer to take them off when I'm reading for a length of time. Blurrs out the surroundings and I'm less distracted that way.

stoneysongs · 10/05/2022 22:08

Thanks I will try Asda. I have tried two opticians so far, Specsavers and an independent one, and both quoted over £500. I'm not sure why they're so expensive as DH's were about £200, maybe astigmatism or because my short sightedness is quite bad.

Madhairday · 10/05/2022 22:08

Yes, I'm 50 and -7.5/7, I have to take my glasses off to read small print. I'm really struggling to read things now with my contact lenses in and suspect I need reading glasses for when I'm wearing them. It's definitely getting worse as I get older. Also have astigmatism.

Mossstitch · 10/05/2022 22:10

I wore glasses for short-sightedness since childhood but as I've aged and need reading glasses, well into my 50s for me, I no longer need distance glasses even for driving........ Finally a benefit of ageing👏😂

Wartywart · 10/05/2022 22:15

Yes, in my fifties now and take glasses off to read. Will probably try varificals in a couple of years. I understand Asda are the cheapest in that regard.
