Birthday ideas for husband who has just come out of hospital

Hi everyone,

It's my husband's birthday later this week however he has just come out of hospital after an operation and is not feeling that great / can't get about at all. He's not fussed about this birthday in the slightest all but I would like to do something nice for him to cheer him up. I have suggested cooking him a nice meal but he's said that he doesn't have much interest in food at the moment.

Obviously he's being very well looked after and has said to not worry about his birthday as me taking care of him is enough however I don't really want the day to just pass by. I'm a bit stuck for ideas, however small - can anyone help, please?

Indoor fireworks or small fireworks in the garden and sparklers

Film night at home.
Board games evening.
Not "special" if these are the sorts of things you do regularly anyway, but a chance to spend some time together.
Birthday cake, even if he only eats a little.

Thank you - I might make a nice cake, we usually have a tradition of Caterpillar Cake but perhaps this calls for a special cake. With sparklers!!

He'll no doubt wish he'd had the Caterpillar Cake as baking his not my forte! 😁

Buy him LEGO, everyone loves LEGO.

I’d mark it with a cake, a small meal (tapas or snacks really) and if he is likely to improve & be better soon, something to look forward to - tickets to something, a day out etc

Board games
Simple DIY projects if he's crafty
You can create a birthday video for him or make a custom birthday song, it doesn't have to be something sophisticated as it would be fun either way. If you both enjoy bigger celebrations you can plan one for him together to have when he's better!

Does he like icecream? I’d make an icecream cake - just buy a tub, line a cake tin with gladwrap, put the icecream in and when you turn it out decorate with lollies. Easy to eat and leftovers can stayin the freezer until he has more interest.

Then I’d plan a lovely night in watching something he enjoys and buy him something that he can use now while he recovers eg sports magazines, a throw or lovely socks and something for when he is feeling better.

Hope he has a lovely day!!

You could have a Zoom party with a few of his close family/friend, maybe just half an hour if he's not feeling too good, where you all have a drink together and they get to wish him happy birthday. Or get people to send you videos of themselves wishing him a happy birthday and play them to him.

A bit of quiet pampering? Run him a nice bath, with a cup of tea or glass of something, a few tasty nibbles, a book, a favourite film and plan something nice for in a few weeks 😗

gluenotsoup · 11/05/2022 16:45

Yeah…. Fat fingers, not really blowing you a kiss😂😂

Does he normally like birthdays? If so, you do a mini-birthday now. With mini Colins and a film and whatever else he can face. A new puzzle book! New socks! Some tiny gadget.

Then have a better birthday in a while. With a full sized Colin.

CurbsideProphet · 11/05/2022 16:49

A birthday cameo message from a celebrity? Some very funny / bonkers options on there and not expensive.

I agree with really nice nibbles / tapas so he's not feeling over faced by a big meal. I think you can also get mini caterpillar cakes or muffins now which might be a nice nod to your tradition.

Or an old school lucky dip in a cardboard box.
