Eco way to kill snails

What's an eco way to kill snails and slugs? We inherited a beautiful garden, and it's just full of snails (and some slugs) at the moment. The previous owner had lots of slug pellets and similar, but we're worried these will also harm hedgehogs and other wildlife. Is there an eco way to kill them?

(I know some people prefer not to kill them at all, but I need to kill them I'm afraid.)

I scoop them up with a trowel and send them soaring over the fence.

I like to think they enjoy it.

Super Slug!

You could try a beer trap. Sink a yoghurt pot or similar container into soil so the rim is level with the soil and put beer in it. They are attracted to it and fall in and drown. It's not pleasant clearing them but it works.

I snip any I see in half with a pair of scissors. At least it’s quick! Beer traps are very effective for the rest.

Nematodes!

If you want the real experts post in the gardening topic - they are in constant battle with slugs and the like over there.

Scottishflower65 · 10/05/2022 18:47

Oh yes, beer trap too. They prefer lager. I tip them out for the birds to enjoy after a quick rinse with the hose.

ValBiro · 10/05/2022 18:48

I also fling them through the air over the back fence into an alleyway (not a pedestrian one! The back access to our terrace). There is a big pigeon nest in the tree in the alley so I am sending them food!

Georgyporky · 10/05/2022 18:50

I thought this was about cooking snails !
I used to used to use salt until I realised this was bad for birds that subsequently eat them.
Now I use beer traps.

PlantingTrees · 10/05/2022 18:54

Stamp on them or lob them over the fence or onto the garage roof. Sometimes I take the across the road and hope they get squashed by cars on the way back. They have a homing instinct

I wonder if the birds are all going around pleasantly tipsy after ingesting lagered up slugs Grin

seasaltandsunscreen · 10/05/2022 18:55

Confused snip them in half?? Fuck me.

SwelegantParty · 10/05/2022 18:57

The old style slug pellets are now illegal, but there are new ones which kill slugs and snails but don't harm other wildlife, and they're easily available.

Longdistance · 10/05/2022 19:02

My dm used to cover them in salt and they’d end up in snail heaven 👼 or was that slugs?

katseyes7 · 10/05/2022 19:03

I've recently got some slug pubs (small containers with a couple of holes) which you put beer in) to keep the slugs out of my hedgehog feeder. I can't use a pot or a jam jar sunk into the soil as my feeder's on my decking, and they seem to come up from under there. One evening last week there were six slugs in the feeder within the space of an hour, some big ones.
I bought some very cheap (four cans for £1!) beer from Tesco. The container's next to the feeder, and it seems to be working. There are a couple of big ones and some smaller ones in there already.
It works well because the hedgehogs get fed, and aren't hungry enough to eat the slugs, which carry lungworm which is very detrimental to hedgehogs.
Although a friend told me that they use beer traps, and they have toads in their garden (l don't) and that one morning they had a very unhappy toad which was clearly 'feeling the effects from eating the marinated slugs' the night before.

posalie · 10/05/2022 19:24

Thanks everyone! Do I need to plant lots of these beer pots? The garden measures 18x8m, though a good bit of that is grass.

Killing them is not “eco”. Don’t kid yourself you are interfering with the ecosystem by doing so.

Gonewalking · 10/05/2022 19:30

Snip them in half?! Wtf?!🙄

according to the hedgehog rescue I’ve done some work with, they do still kill the hedgehogs. They just take longer.

www.siennahosta.co.uk/pages/garlic-wash-recipe

this is a recipe for a garlic spray, it works a treat. Just spray it on your plants once a week or so and it puts them off. please don’t snip them, what a horrible horrible way to go.

lljkk · 10/05/2022 19:45

Beer traps also kill froglets. I find that quite traumatic.

Ducks. Ducks eat snails. Frogs eat slugs, too.

wonkygorgeous · 10/05/2022 20:32

I use this mesh:

Senua Copper Mesh for Pest Control | Mouse, Rat, Slug, Snail, Insect and Rodent Control | Rodent Mesh, Snail Repellent, Pigeon Deterrent | Pest Exclusion Wire Mesh Roll (15m / 50ft) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09LD19VQY/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_SRA9CPNGKWMK47P6NJ1T

Cut it lengthways so it has spiky edges and it's an excellent slug deterrent.

Beer traps to keep numbers down.

Hedgehogs are the best natural method but haven't figured out where to find them.

ElenaSt · 10/05/2022 20:38

Scissors. Snip then in half.

Ifailed · 10/05/2022 20:41

chucking them over the fence might not work as they can apparently 'home'.

AdoraBell · 10/05/2022 20:43

I use crushed egg shells.
