Need help booking a Wimbledon trip as am bamboozled by London!

Could I please ask for advice from those familiar with London as I seem to be crippled with indecision around this! My husband has gotten tickets for the ladies finals at Wimbledon this year. We are flying into London for two nights. But where to stay? Should we stay closer to the grounds and travel into London for a bit of shopping and food or visa versa? Which airport? How do we travel when there? Is a taxi from central London out to Wimbledon viable? Thank you so much in advance as I need to book soon!

I would stay in central London so you can enjoy everything it has to offer in the evenings. Travel to Wimbledon from London Waterloo on South Western Trains is very quick and easy. There are loads of trains that stop there anyway and other trains make additional stops there during Wimbledon fortnight. Are you asking which airport to fly into as well ? Either Heathrow or Gatwick have very good connections into central London then you have a choice of a zillion hotels depending on your budget. You could really look at anywhere in central London and Waterloo is easily accessible by tube.

Accommodation near the LTA gets booked up insanely early that fortnight.

Yes you could get a cab there, but I would recommend looking at the public transport links, fanning out from there and picking location to stay that's an easy journey but where hotels are less likely to be full (or at premium price)

I don't think it'll matter which airport you come in to. All have good links into central London.

I would probably look to stay somewhere Earl's Court or South Kensington (also on tube from Heathrow) from which its easy to get in to central London if you fancy it, and which are also on District Line which will take you to the stations closest to the LTA. Also there are loads of good places to eat, open until late, and you might appreciate that if play goes on until the light goes.

Where are you flying from?
City Airport might work - located in the heart of Docklands so no need for travel from Heathrow or GAtwick.

I'd be very surprised if you could find anywhere local to Wimbledon to stay at this stage, there's very few hotels and the players rent nearby houses for the duration. Stay in central London, with access to the district line or Waterloo for tubes or trains to Southfields or Wimbledon

London is a very easy city to travel to and around. All the major airports are accessible either by taxi, rail or coach services depending on your pocket and the time of your arrival. Rail is fast and will take you to one of the major rail terminals in London and you can then either take a cab, tube or bus to your hotel. Black cabs will be available at the rail station and would probably be the easiest if you are not familiar with London. Heathrow is accessible by tube.

I would stay centrally rather than near Wimbledon. The final match will not be until the afternoon so there will be no rush to get there in the morning, and it won’t be late finishing so plenty of time to return to a hotel. Getting to Wimbledon is possible by tube and then a short taxi ride.

Ah thank you so much for the replies, so Central London it is. At least that is one decision made! I’m not sure of airport yet but I think I’ll try to get hotel first and work from there. Thanks again I was paralysed by indecision!

Also, don't discount Luton airport.

May be cheaper flights and rail to London.

Wimbledon resident here living v close to the AELTC. It's lovely here but sleepy. Bit buzzier during tournament but there are far more interesting places to stay to make the most of London. As a PP said it's an easy trip - easiest is District Line , head for Wimbledon but get off at Southfields. About 30 mins from central London. Enjoy!

Merryoldgoat · 13/05/2022 21:22

If you’re there JUST for Wimbledon then the Travelodge in Raynes Park is fine as easy to get to the grounds by public transport and there are a few places to eat local which are nice and not silly money.

If Wimbledon is incidental and you plan on some other stuff then Central is better

Southlandssue · 13/05/2022 21:59

@Merryoldgoat Have you seen the price of the Raynes Park traveled Travelodge in Wimbledon fortnight??

Hbh17 · 13/05/2022 22:05

Stay in Central London, maybe on/near the District Line so you can get the Tube to Southfields. Then a 10 minute walk to the club - don't bother with taxis.

artificialhells · 13/05/2022 22:21

If i were you I would stay in South Ken. District line to Southfields (don’t go to Wimbledon station- it’s not close to the grounds). Easy to get to from Heathrow (take the Heathrow express to Paddington then circle line) or Gatwick (Gatwick express to Victoria then walk/ circle/ district lines). Lots of bars and restaurants and obviously the museums there too. Perfect for a brief stay.

have a lovely time!

@Merryoldgoat Have you seen the price of the Raynes Park traveled Travelodge in Wimbledon fortnight??

No but I’d expect it to be £200 ish?

Is that not quite reasonable for somewhere so near? London won’t be cheaper for somewhere decent.

Belindabelle · 14/05/2022 15:49

Where are you travelling from?

I live in Central Scotland and always get the train to London. I find it more relaxing and usually quicker than flying especially if you have luggage to collect.

I would pick a hotel near the train station you arrive at and use the underground/ rail links to get to Wimbledon.

Netaporter · 14/05/2022 15:55

Lucky you OP! Have a wonderful time! I’d stay in central london, there are buses that take you from the UG station to the ground frequently so don’t worry but even then it is a 15min walk. If you fancy breakfast before the game make sure you book. Every adult is allowed one 75cl bottle of wine in with them so don’t fret about the price of Pimms take champers with you 😉

Bouledeneige · 14/05/2022 17:33

Agree with the advice to stay in central London. It really depends if you want to do any sightseeing or just want nice food and shopping.

Nice food and shopping areas to stay - I'd think about Marylebone, Chelsea, Bermondsey, Fitzrovia or Kings Cross. But it does depend on your budget.

LittleBearPad · 14/05/2022 17:35

I wouldn’t worry too much about airports. Gatwick and Heathrow are both easy trips to London

thing47 · 14/05/2022 17:54

Just to point out that OP is coming for Ladies Final, it won't be so busy by then as there won't be much play on the outside courts by then. Also @unbelievable1 if you are into watching doubles, it might still be a long day as the men's and mixed doubles finals usually take place after the Ladies singles and trophy presentation.
