BowelBabe...heartbroken but inspired!

I just wanted to share, as no one to really discuss with in real life, but I've been knocked for six by the news that BowelBabe (Deborah) (off of social media) has exhausted all active methods of treatment and is now using hospice at home care.

Although my life has not been immediately touched by the fucker that is cancer, I find her an absolute blazing inspiration, a lesson in how to LIVE, to dance, to dress up, to smile! She has also set up the BowelBabe Fund, which has already raised an amazing amount of money for research within minutes as her legacy. I wish her and all her family all the best in the world.

Thanks for posting OP. I am also very sad and feel a little strange as I didn't know her personally but she just really inspired me. Will be thinking of her children too tonight.

Hatinafield · 09/05/2022 23:16

Am also so sad tonight. She has put up the most inspirational fight. I hope she’s pain-free and her family can take some comfort in her incredible achievements.❤

KatherineParr · 09/05/2022 23:25

I've felt very emotional since I heard the news - I was very ill last year and Deborah was such an inspiration to me as I recovered. Absolute legend.

HangingOver · 09/05/2022 23:29

Feel so sad. 😞

Lathil · 09/05/2022 23:32

Absolutely heartbroken tonight 💔 Checking in on how Deborah was doing was one of my morning habits for a couple of years now . I think her zest for life was incredible and I'm so sorry she is facing her last days . She can go out smiling though she's been amazing 👏

SabiRiver · 09/05/2022 23:44

Really sad to hear this too. I followed her as she was diagnosed around the same time as my friend. My friend passed away 3 years ago. Hope she is comfortable and surrounded by love.

Fizbosshoes · 09/05/2022 23:51

Ive not really followed her but seen her on a few things and found her very positive and inspirational.
I was in tears reading her post (shared by cancer research on fb) and can't imagine what it must be like to write that and know that your days are numbered. Feel heartbroken for her, her husband, kids and parents.

amc8583 · 09/05/2022 23:52

I have also been following her on Instagram for years. I welled up reading her post. Utterly devastating for her family. Her precious children...She has without a doubt left a legacy for many years to come.

Fund is over a million pounds. Well done Debs.

Abra1d1 · 10/05/2022 18:21

Her last podcast is up on BBC Sounds.

Candleabra · 10/05/2022 22:39

Heartbreaking. She is so brave and inspiring.
Her fund has just reached £2m which is incredible in such a short time.

daisydalrymple · 11/05/2022 18:44

I think it’s about to reach £3 million this evening. So moved by her words. I hope she is aware of how much her too short life has touched so many people, and done such an incredible act with this fund raiser and her positivity. What a legacy to leave behind.

3littlerabbitsss · 11/05/2022 18:59

Just incredible.
I’ve just looked up the total raised and am in absolute awe. The love and positivity she has created is just mind blowing.

3littlerabbitsss · 11/05/2022 19:00

It’s £3Million now. Deborah, you absolute legend ❤️

BellaTelly · 11/05/2022 19:19

Such an incredible lady and what she has done with raising awareness and fundraising will make a difference.

I know personally one young person who has died of bowel cancer (40s) and I know someone else who currently has it (think she’s probably late 40s/early 50s). I also know of 3 friends of friends (also younger people) who have had it (two of them sadly passed away).

Yet still GPs are dismissive. When I visited my GP with changes to my bowel movements she was dismissive and said it was unlikely to be serious due to my age. Thankfully I had health insurance so got a colonoscopy privately.

God bless Deborah, her family and friends.

RightThenWhatNext · 12/05/2022 07:28

She’s bloody amazing. I can’t begin to imagine how you face that imminent decline. She’s made bloody good use of her time on this planet.

toomuchlaundry · 12/05/2022 22:20

She has just been honoured with a damehood

LizzieSiddal · 12/05/2022 22:24

She has just been honoured with a damehood

Gosh she will be so chuffed about that! I’ve followed her for years as my
family also has a history of bowel cancer. She’s such an inspirational woman and it’s so bloody sad her life is being cut short by this. I feel so much for her children. 😢

diamondpony80 · 12/05/2022 22:54

Listened to her final podcast today. Impossible not to shed a few tears and count my own blessings. It has made me more aware of my own mortality (which scares me to think about) and made me think more of how I can use my time here on earth more wisely. I’d like to think I’m only half way through my life, but you never know

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 12/05/2022 23:02

She's been given a damehood - go on Debs! Can't believe she won't be around anymore, she has been such a big presence on my social media for so long. I'm going to go back and listen to old episodes of You, Me and the Big C, loved Rachael so much as well 😔

Candleabra · 12/05/2022 23:15

Wow amazing. Well done Dame Deborah
I bet the fund will smash through £4m tonight
