I didn't know pressure washing the roof was a thing

Someone on our road is having their roof cleaned and one of the workmen has knocked on the door to see if we want ours done. These houses are about 20 years old and they have red tiled roofs which I think look better aged than brand new, but that's just personal opinion, I'm sure the cleaned roof will be the preference of the neighbour having it done.

I'm just surprised that there are companies offering it, I've never heard of it before. Are there other unexpected things that can be pressure washed?

(Also, the more I type the word 'roof' the stranger it looks.)

I’m pretty sure that jet washing is not great for the roof. Lots of other ways to have it cleaned. Do your research!

My relative had this done and it dislodged the ridge tiles, which then fell down causing considerable damage.
I'd leave your roof alone!

Yes this is a thing.
You're supposed to brush the moss off with a soft brush.

caecilius1 · 09/05/2022 17:44

Clearing the gutters of moss is different to steam cleaning the roof tiles !

We have quite a bit of Moss on the roof and don't mind it. The birds love the creatures that are in it

weddingwaiting · 09/05/2022 17:56

You can have your roof cleaned but don’t have it jet washed it is bad for the tiles!

We had ours scraped of all the moss and treated so it wouldn’t grow back £450

i give my wheelie bin a wash probably 2 x a year and is very easy to do if you live in a house with a outside tap,i never get maggots and have once every 2 weeks collection

just make sure the bag is tied so no flies can get in and also if you bag properly your bin should always be clean i only do it because ive always done it but always tied bags well

do people still just chuck loose items in because thats a sure way to get maggots

The first floor of the houses here are set back from the ground floor. My NDN decided to stand on his with his Karcher at full whack...he did the roof tiles, soffits and fascia boards.
Unsurprisingly he damaged the ceiling in his garage, hall and dining room.🤦‍♀️
He also has swirly patterns on the tiles above the garage.
Mrs NDN was predictably not very pleased with the outcome😹

stealthninjamum · 09/05/2022 19:39

I’m having my roof brushed soon, it’s full of moss. It’s by a roofer who knows what he’s doing. I’ve been told you can get really powerful jet washes and more gentle ones. The powerful ones do the damage but I feel more comfortable having someone do it with a brush and it takes two days so I know it’s a thorough job rather than a quick jet.

That’s so stupid. It’s like people who damage their car by jet washing. I’ve seen people on Facebook asking who can touch up their car paint because their overexcited husband used his new jet wash toy to clean the car.

The perception of nature as mess is a big problem. We need less pointless tidying and more moss and lichen. Thank God there are still birds around to chuck the moss.

100% ^

We need to live with nature and stop trying to bend it around ourselves.

Pressure washing rooves is pointless and environmentally destructive. Nature is clean already.

But why do you need it cleaned?

I'd be interested in @pigletjohn@pigletjohn's view.
Perhaps they powereash roofs when they're be

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 09/05/2022 19:45

It's not a good idea.

It can loosen the mortar in between the ridge tiles. The house opposite ours had it done and you can see daylight between them now !

Comefromaway · 09/05/2022 19:45

When we moved in the moss on our roof was so bad it totally clogged the drains up every time it rained.

we didn’t have it pressure washed though as that can cause damage. It was removed in a slightly different way (not exactly sure how)

I think this is what they did.

Trying to say 'when they are not siliconing damp courses..'

StuckCompletely · 09/05/2022 19:49

My roof is 100 years old, I think a jet wash would finish it off 😆

stealthninjamum · 09/05/2022 20:04

@TargusEasting I have quite a bad moss problem and am forever getting the gutters cleared. Moss can also cause a problem with roof tiles. The other reason - and I’m sorry if this sounds like a stealth boast - but I have a big house that I’d like to sell and the difference in money we can make for a smart, newly painted house with a clean roof and clean driveway and paths would more than pay for the cost of doing the work.

TargusEasting · 09/05/2022 20:34

Our roof is also large and covered in moss. We clean the gutters out by hand.

It will still sell and we won't anaesthetise the wildlife into oblivion in the process for financial gain.

Lizziekisss · 09/05/2022 20:42

My neighbour had her roof pressure washed ( now there might be a right and wrong way to do it, or maybe her roof was faulty in the first place), but wet got in and rotted her roof timbers. Cost a fortune to fix

PigletJohn · 09/05/2022 21:29

I've hear copper strip along the ridge, as used for lightening conductors, affects the chemistry of the water enough to discourage moss. you'd need a real roofer to do it (who will scoff at jetwashing)

near the ground, you can use "wet and forget" which is a sort of soapy spray that kills moss.

NannyGythaOgg · 09/05/2022 21:39

I'd like to know how to quickly age my roof tiles. It's a new build (3 years old now) in the garden of an older house and the sun reflecting of my roof is blinding to them at times.

endoflevelbaddy · 09/05/2022 22:44

I'd be really wary of anyone doorstopping you for this sort of service. We had a company locally that we're doing this sort of work with a sort of "diffuser" rather than pressure washer so as not to damage the tiles.
A group of blokes in similar looking t shirts started door knocking neighbouring properties pretending to offer same service. They were chancers, damaging tiles, spraying moss all over neighbouring properties, conning folk for additional repairs they "discovered" while up there and making up prices to see what they could get away with. Even told one of our neighbours that her husband had agreed to it doing and started work before he got home to stop them!

I'd be very wary.

SouthOfFrance · 09/05/2022 17:28

I can see in hot weather if you get maggots in your bin the appeal of a bin cleaner, but firstly some boiling hot water quickly sorts that out, and also like @daffodilandtulip said, it happens so rarely it seems unnecessary to get it done every week.
Pretty sure in the past 15 years I've only had the maggot issue twice. Recon I've saved myself thousands 😆

You're very lucky getting your bin collected weekly.

Our bin cleaning costs £1.50 fortnightly.

RunAwayNow · 10/05/2022 09:53

My neighbour had their roof jetwashed and it caused so much damage that it knocked the chimney stack off the roof. Put me off ever doing it!
