Ten Tors

Did anyone else’s DC take part in Ten Tors this weekend? For those who don’t live in the South West this involves teenagers taking part in walks of 35, 45 or 55 miles across Dartmoor in teams of 6 with no adult support or supervision.

DS did a 45 mile walk with his school. I was so proud of him. This event was cancelled for the last 2 years due to COVID, so it was so lovely that they finally got the chance to take part.

Teenagers can get such a bad press, but it was so heartwarming to see over 2,500 of them taking part in such a challenge.

Yes! Proud mum here too. He's gone to bed already.

I agree, Dartmoor awash with amazing teenagers this weekend.

Better weather for them this year saw some red faces on our schools team photos but better than being airlifted off in awful conditions they have had some years. Amazing achievement from the kids and the organising they goes behind it all. Such a great opportunity for them all.

There may have been a tear in my eye when he crossed the finishing line!

It was also lovely seeing all the parents cheering everyone else on.

Mine has also gone to bed slightly sunburnt and with blistered feet.

I did find the weekend quite stressful following the tracker!

My DC is in Y9 but a few of her friends in Y10 took part & we’ve been tracking them! I hadn’t really paid much attention to it before, it is an epic challenge! DC is going to see how she gets on with D of E & think about it for next year…

It is an amazing thing, such a feat for those young people to have accomplished. I wouldn't have done it at their age!

TheSmallAssassin · 08/05/2022 21:29

(or now! Dartmoor still worries me whenever I go to bits that don't have a car park and an ice cream van!)

DH was quite jealous until he looked at the route and decided it looked a very long way to walk!

I could never have done it at DS’s age and I couldn’t do it now! So grateful for his teachers giving up their time to train them and enable them to be able to do this.

It’s the trowel that really puts me off @TheSmallAssassin! Our walks are usually limited by the distance from a toilet

I remember taking my son's backpack out of the boot when dropping him off for training one morning, I could barely carry it across to the minibus, let alone up and over tors.

Teenagers are lovely. Well done to all of yours :)

I did all three distances (in different years!) when I was younger and have been following the tracker this weekend with a touch of nostalgia. Such a fantastic event. Really pleased the weather was good for them (I remember the great snow year - was it about 1995? - when anyone who spent the night on the moor got their medal) and well done to the parents who have supported your dc to do it. Even the year my feet were bleeding by the end Blush I didn't regret it.

Was a very misty start on Saturday, so weren’t able to have the parachutists or helicopters at the start, but the sun soon shone through.

It’s always a lottery with the weather

Not a proud mum but one of a support team - we had 2 teams walking, a 35 and a 45.

It’s been an amazing weekend and a privilege to be involved 😁

Well done everyone’s teens. I went to a university with a massive southwestern contingent and those who’d done the Ten Tors were held in very high esteem! My uni boyfriend had done all 3 distances.

I live in the N of England now, and have a 13 year old DS. He’s alright really. I feel that his teens will be OK, but his little sister is brewing for a fight! No real TT equivalent here, we need to find something to focus on.
