DD8 Starting to Smell

DD has just turned 8. Recently and especially after exercise her armpits have started to smell. She bathes every other day so will be making sure it’s daily going forward but
a) is this normal at her age?
b) should we be introducing a deodorant? If so, what is suitable for girls her age.

Ds started at the same time, I made sure he showers every day and changes his tee shirt every day and he also wears a Sure stick deodarant as I thought he’d waste it less than a spray.

I think I started using deodarant at the same age - mine was a Mum rollon

DSS started to smell about that age as you said the days hes been doing exercise. He started wearing deodorant just on pe days. Hes 10 and still on an every other day shower but on days hes been doing something physical it can be daily. We just talk to him honestly about hygiene. Saying we shower daily, wear deodorant ect.

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 08/05/2022 19:42

Both my sons started at 8 too.
Showers in the morning using bar soap and a roll on deodoratn. I just got my boys lynx. That's what the supermarket had shelves and shelves of! Didnt put much thought into it.

Just get her an anti-persperant.

My dd starting smelling at 8, I have bought her wild deodorant, bit more fun than a standard deo as you can pick a colourful metal case (they even have a rainbow case) and different scents to be delivered. Also leave baby wipes in her school bag incase she wants a freshen up at school

DD started a bit earlier than this. I took her to the doctor, just to get her checked out and it registered that it was a bit "early". I've had hideous problems with hormones etc so wanted it listed in case it's linked to something in the future. The GP checked her other signs of puberty and she goes once a year to monitor her growth.
I bought her a deodorant, she washes every day. Avoids polyester clothing where possible.

Yes, it is on the normal age range for developing BO.

I would start a daily shower, especially now with warmer temperatures, and a decent wash in the morning with a flannel and soap.

PE kit/polycotton school uniform and all kind of clothes with polyester in it can make it worth, ideally swap to cotton only tops.

I think DD started on a deodorant called Fresh Kidz, we got it from Tesco. It. did the trick until she was 10/11.

MrsGHarrison87 · 08/05/2022 19:45

Yeah it's about the right age. You could get a roll on if you're not wanting to use a spray

alexdgr8 · 08/05/2022 19:46

does she make a point to wash under the arms with a flannel on the non-bath days.
if using a deodorant, try a gentle roll-on, or solid block that can be moistened.
avoid aluminium if possible.
lidl do a roll-on without aluminium, it has a cyan top.
if you discuss the issue, do it in terms of part of growing up, ie a positive marker of development.

Thank you for all of your replies.
It didn’t even occur to me that maybe hormones would kick in at this age but makes sense.
We will definitely move to daily showers and I will look at Wild deodorant for her. I may even add in a proper face wash too.
I think I’ll sit down with her and explain that now she is getting older, we need to ensure she is keeping herself fresh and clean and all of these will help.

totally normal
encourage to wash properly with soap (turned out that dc was not using soap in the bath) and change of t-shirt/top daily.

you can get unscented mild deodorants, like nivea zero.

DS started using Scrubbington’s pit stop at about 9/10. Deodorant for kids, made of gentle stuff.

Spudina · 08/05/2022 20:19

A couple of things to try. Soap is more effective than shower gel. Make sure her uniform is cotton. White vinegar in the wash can help get sweat off clothes. I had a reaction to Wild deodorant and they now do a sensitive one.

almondbran · 08/05/2022 20:22

Make sure you’re getting her an antiperspirant rather than just deodorant or body spray

Hesma · 08/05/2022 20:35

My eldest Dd started with dove deodorant stick at 8, youngest at 9. Perfectly normal

I agree with the vinegar. I also use Zoflora in the wash to get sweat out of clothing if nothing else helps, a bit directly on the armpit and an extra rinse.

Compulsory polycotton shirt, compulsory poylycotton jumper worn under a compulsory polyester blazer at secondary school, got she stunk to hell last Summer.

My youngest was 8 and was so proud when their pits were smelly, there proudness drove my eldest insane 😂
