It’s a Sunday in 1989, what are you doing?

I would have spent the morning playing out probably on my roller skates. I’d be able to smell roast dinners cooking from all the houses on the street.

Then to my nan and grandads for a roast, played with my cousins and had Sunday tea (cake, crisps, trifle, nothing savoury in sight!).

Home to watch something like The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I would then have my only bath and hair wash of the week and mum would brush and dry my hair in front of the fire watching Antiques Roadshow.

I'd have had a Sunday roast at my parent's, then we'd all go to my grandparents about 4pm. All the family would be there, and we'd have a choice of cakes that she'd baked in the morning....chocolate was always my favourite.

Favouritefruits · 08/05/2022 18:03

I would have only been small so probably playing with my dolls

FogLight · 08/05/2022 18:12

I remember the concerts I went to that year,., Suzanne Vega, Bananarama, The Bangles, Lou Reed 😝
I travelled widely so could have been on an island in Australia or in a cafe in New York or ice skating in Canada on different Sundays.

Mollymoo67 · 08/05/2022 18:16

Recording the Top 40 😄 and getting ready to go back to uni (usually went home at weekends)

mumda · 08/05/2022 18:21

University. Eating Sunday tea and pudding with custard. Wondering what music they'd be playing at the bar later.

100problems · 08/05/2022 18:33

Shagging the boyfriend before going home for a roast dinner.

TimBoothseyes · 08/05/2022 18:34

Honestly? Wondering whether DSD's mother would actually bother to visit her and trying to think of a way to make the day better when that visit didn't happen. 1989 was a difficult year.

Abraxan · 08/05/2022 18:37

May 1989 - revising and in middle of GCSEs.
May have met up with boyfriend during the afternoon/evening if I didn't have an exam the next day.

Iamtheweedonkey · 08/05/2022 18:38

Sunday's were watching channel 4 in the morning and taping top 40 in the afternoon. I would have been 15.

clarasara · 08/05/2022 18:40

At grandmas watching the Eastenders Omnibus after stuffing our faces.

TheChild · 08/05/2022 18:41

I would have been 5 days old on the last Sunday of 1989, so probably crying and pooing quite a lot 😁

Waking up and watching whatever cartoons were on TV.

Take a walk over to the park across the road with my dad while mam cooked a big roast.

'Helping' mam and dad carry the table from the kitchen (where it was stored but couldn't be sat at as too cramped) into the centre of the living room to all sit around at lunch.

Reminding dad to open the front door to let some air in after an afternoon of them both chain smoking inside (yes really...i was 3, I remember this!)

Bath and sitting in front of the fire watching corrie with mam before bed. Sliced ham and cucumber on a plate for tea (every night!).

maddiemookins16mum · 08/05/2022 18:44

I had just started working overseas as a holiday rep 😊, the season would have only just a week or so ago. I’d have been doing airport transfers or visiting hotels to look after my guests.

lljkk · 08/05/2022 18:45

Work. I had the 11-6 shift IIRC. For years.

ofwarren · 08/05/2022 18:45

I'm 9 years old and I would be biking with my next door neighbour to her nans house in the next town where she would give us a bowl of what she called "vegetable broth" and a glass of babycham.
We would then cycle to the park and petting zoo near her house, riding past the canal and stay there till tea time.
Tea would always be a roast on a Sunday and we would eat it in front of the TV where my dad would force us to watch rugby or snooker. He never let us control the remote.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 08/05/2022 18:46

I'd have been 'a twinkle in my dads eye' as my mum would say when referring to the time before I was born...

notprincehamlet · 08/05/2022 18:48

Working - I was a law student with a weekend job in a clothing shop. My work uniform included a tartan skirt with pencil pleats - it was an absolute bastard to iron. Happy days!

andpeggy1 · 08/05/2022 18:49

At my christening weeing on my godfather 😂

LowlandLucky · 08/05/2022 18:50

Getting ready to move to a new married quarter, so doing a marchout clean with a toddler and a newborn. Husband was on detatchment so it was down to me to do it all.

JollyWilloughby · 08/05/2022 18:51

Aged 1. No idea 😂

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 08/05/2022 18:51

Always listen to absolute 80s this time every Sunday. They do 2 chart years. One of tonight's is 1989 🤩

Corrie didn’t start being shown on a Sunday until the mid 90s. Not knocking your memories (they sound lovely) but it has made me think about how many of our recollections are accurate! Going to ask my sister what hers are of 1989 and see if ours match up at all.

Nuffaluff · 08/05/2022 18:56

I was 12, so I’d be listening to the top 40, trying to record the songs on cassette without getting Bruno Brookes’ voice in it and writing down the top ten in really tiny writing in my special notebook.

Hadalifeonce · 08/05/2022 18:57

Spending the day on my own while exH, does his hobby!

MrsMop1964 · 08/05/2022 18:57
