Real work advice

Just for fun, what is some real work advice (outside the usual cannon) you'd give to someone just starting out?

Mine would be:

  1. Salaried is usually better because all those perks add up.
  2. Don't be afraid to job-hop as that's the only way to get a proper pay-rise.
  3. Get qualifications whenever you can. I've found that qualifications lead to pay rises more reliably than experience.
  4. Don't jump in to solve problems that are outside your remit. Unless you're specifically being paid to be responsible for something, leave it.

What is the difference between salaried and paid hourly?

What is the difference between salaried and paid hourly?

I mean as opposed to free-lance/self-employed/contractor.

I've done both and whilst the hourly rate is higher for free-lance, I've found the perks like pension (and in some places, other benefits) mean you end up better off.

Might be industry specific though.

Pay isn't everything. Sometimes it's better to stay somewhere where you love the job and the colleagues rather than chase a higher paid job,.

Yes!

Another one, sounds cynical, but healthy workplaces where people are just normal and collegial to one another are very rare! So if you find one, STAY!
