I'm making this today and am tempted to just buy it ready made, i usually make it myself with butter and icing sugar, has anyone tried the shop bought stuff?

I had no clue this was even a thing!
I had a Google and they all say buttercream style icing. Looking at the ingredients, it’s not something I’d want to serve up in my home made cake tbh.

Does it exist? I can only imagine it would be one of those weird non food foodstuffs that are so popular in America. I have family over there and their cake making rarely includes actual food, it's full of fluffs, cremes, non dairy oojahs and sugar free whotsits. And it all tastes much the same - really really sweet.

It's ok but it's definitely artificial tasting

LadyPenelope68 · 08/05/2022 11:51

It’s nowhere near as nice as the real stuff you make, but it’s ok as a quick fix as a frosting on cupcakes etc. I wouldn’t put it in a homemade Victoria sponge though as it’s very sickly, would totally spoil the sponge. Why not go down the traditional Victoria sponge route and just put jam in, or jam and freshly whipped cream. Both way nicer than buttercream in a home made sponge IMO.

dementedpixie · 08/05/2022 11:51

They're normally found in tubs in the home baking aisle. Havent tried them though

MenaiMna · 08/05/2022 11:53

Too sweet! Some American commercial icings have actual wood pulp in them to fluff them up. Buttercream icing is just butter, cream, confectioner's sugar, maybe cream of tartar for stiffness. Homemade - simple- is best. If you have the tools and patience you might try Swiss meringue buttercream.

The Betty crocker ones look full of crap tbh

Yeah they're not nice.

dementedpixie · 08/05/2022 11:55

I just use butter, icing sugar and enough milk to make it the right consistency

Alwayswonderedwhy · 08/05/2022 11:56

I didn't realise it existed until I went to a cake decorating shop last week to buy a few things. I'd say it's a very expensive way of doing something that's very simple to do at home.

TheCanyon · 08/05/2022 11:57

The betty Crocker one is nice. May well be full of shit but it's cake...

loopylindi · 08/05/2022 11:58

Stands to reason. As with any prepared, processed food, there are costs involved and it usually means maximising profit by using alternative ingredients to real foods (which cost more) Make your own, it doesn't take long and will be much nicer

iknowthismuchis · 08/05/2022 12:05

It's awful and I have VERY low standards

JustMaggie · 08/05/2022 12:20

I've tried the Waitrose vanilla buttercream icing on cupcakes and it was good. But homemade tastes better.

Camomila · 08/05/2022 13:30

You could whip up some double cream? That's what I usually do for Victoria Sponges.

GodspeedJune · 08/05/2022 13:31

The Betty Crocker one is sickly sweet.

tsmainsqueeze · 08/05/2022 13:35

Home made every time with good vanilla extract - not essence .
If your sponge is good don't spoil the cake , you can always tell the difference .

roses2 · 08/05/2022 13:39

Sainsbury taste the difference buttercream icing is delicious, I used some a few months ago

Zilla1 · 08/05/2022 13:45

Is there a pot of additives, stabilisers, emulsifiers, preservatives and other things I can add to cooked-from-scratch and home-baked to make them as good as shop-bought?

ssd · 08/05/2022 14:59

Im just going to make my own, i thought the shop ones would be sickly and sweet but i wondered if anyone here could recommend a decent one.
