Using back door as main door...

Does anyone use their back door as their main door? I'm thinking of doing this as I hate the hall being cramped when we all try and put shoes and coats on and off. It would mean we come in and out direct to the lounge which has French doors. So I haven't worked out what sort or curtains/blinds would be best. Or if its just a shit idea. Parking is generally out the back rather than front.

We have a strange 2 front door set up. I suppose they are like a front door and side door, but side door is also at the front.
We use the not proper front door normally which leads into the utility room.
I wouldn't if it led into the lounge though.

As a kid we always used the back door.

so funny 🤣

Bloops · 07/05/2022 21:54

Don't remember the last time I opened the front door!!

Make your own rules.

If this arrangement suits you, do it.

We had this with our old house, however hard we tried, the carpet got absolutely filthy.

Stomacharmeleon · 07/05/2022 21:56

I do- live in a row on an estate and back door leads straight into garden then garden to parking space. Luckily no carpet so just have to mop floors when sons/ football boots/ wellies come through.

My front door opens up onto a main road. It just makes sense.

My partner thinks I am terribly common though :)

Thanks, all the pros and cons are exactly the same as I've been thinking. Really I need a utility on the way in but never mind!

I grew up with using mainly the backdoor but it let into an utility room and then into the kitchen. Shoes and coats were kept in the utility room, the coat rack next to the main door was for visitors.

No way I would use a door leading to the living room, I like it uncluttered and clean.

We actually disregarded a couple of houses with no hallway where the door lead straight into the living room with the stairs leading up from the back of the room as I found it to intrusive on a daily basis.

We have a side door into the utility. DH uses that as his main door because he has a job where he's often coming in dusty and a hobby where he can get very muddy. So he comes in at the side and leave the dirty clothes or shoes in the utility. Keeps the hallway nice and clean for visitors instead of traipsing mud though the house. He also parks his van down the side of the house right by the side door. Everyone else uses the front door though.

Rowgtfc72 · 08/05/2022 09:48

We use our side door into the kitchen. I've just started using the front door as we've found all the keys are stiff and the door is awkward to open.
As a previous poster said, growing up in the 80s the front door was only for visitors.

Antarcticant · 08/05/2022 09:52

I did in one house I lived in. Old terrace 'two up two down' with downstairs bathroom extension. The front door opened straight into the living room but the back door opened into a lobby with the bathroom off it so there was a place for coats and shoes in the lobby. It was the logical thing to do.

Waystation · 08/05/2022 10:00

I get irrationally angry when visitors use my back door - unfortunately the drive leads round to the back of the house so they automatically park there - so it makes sense to go to the nearest door - I have thought about getting a sign saying “visitors please use the front door” but DH says it’s silly and I probably agree with him…..

InTheCludgie · 08/05/2022 10:03

We use the back door fairly often, there's access to a lane at the end our garden which leads round to the next street, if I'm going a walk or popping to the local shops I'll go this way. There's about 25 steps up to my mid terrace at the front door and I live at the bottom of a hill so it's mostly laziness from me!

You and me both. 😂

Oldraver · 08/05/2022 11:09

We've been doing this for about a year as we have kittens and can keep a 'cat lock' so we can come through the back door into the utility where the door to the kitchen is shut, so stopping them from legging it.

Coats and shoes are kept in the hall and at the moment as the carpets are old not so precious about shoes, though if muddy wet will take them off there

thekaratekid · 08/05/2022 11:13

We always use the front door. In a previous house the garage and parking were round the back with the front of the house facing a greensward. Due to the set-up, our house and neighbours house didn't have a gate leading from parking area to the garden. So we did the sensible thing and walked the short 10 second walk round to our front door. Neighbour was an idiot (in more ways than one) and used to open his the garage, walk through garage, unlock door leading to garden and then go into the house through the French doors. So bizarre, and so many different sets of keys.

Other neighbour actually had a gate and used to always walk through their dog poo ridden garden and into the house via French doors.
