What's with all the bugs

Everywhere. Clouds of them. All buzzing in your ears as you walk anywhere.

I just got out my car and at least 2 flew at me.

Where are they all coming from.

They come from Swindon. Every year they decide to head out across the UK to spread love and happiness. They then return to Swindon once autumn comes and then hibernate over the winter.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/05/2022 14:53

Damn u Swindon. We have enough of our own bugs we don't need anyone else's

Good. Let's hope the insect population is increasing.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/05/2022 14:57

If they could increase in slightly smaller crowds put of the way of the foot path that would be great.

I'm a nature lover with the best of them . I find bugs and minibeats fascinating and still get excited peering under rocks.

But I'd like to not accidentally inhale them or rinse one out my eyeballs because I found a party I wasn't invited too 😅

Back when I were a lass, the car windscreens would be thick with squashed insects after even a moderate journey. Now......often nothing 😥

This.

Its spring. This is what happens.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/05/2022 16:17

Perhaps that explains the sheer volume of pigeon poo that my car seems to attract ? <eyes up fat pigeons on the fence>

I would examine it for evidence of legs, antennae or wings but I fear that would be a step to far?

I was about to say the same thing! Even butterflies in the garden are so much scarcer than I remember in the 90s.

We need more insects! They're good for pollination and bird life.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/05/2022 16:52

I always wanted a butterfly Bush. Those pretty purple ones that get filled with butterflies 🦋 💜

I live near lots of fields so I'm lucky enough to get to see lots of bees 😍 if I go to the right places and even a secret little dirt track where we sometimes go bat watching.

Endless clouds of gnats/teeny buzzy things though...

And the wasps that keep flying In my bedroom.window can piss off

Yes my front drive has a fair bit of bird doo doo on it of late. Not noticed any insect increase however.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/05/2022 17:13

I've just walked through more gnats on the way to the park..

They must all be here

The biker's phrase 'Bugs in ma teeth' has not been relevant for years. Let's hope it is an upturn in bug populations.

over2021 · 07/05/2022 17:28

Where I live is currently inundated with caterpillars. They are literally dropping out of the trees in our local park Shock

daveyfish · 07/05/2022 17:31

It’s st mark’s fly/hawthorn fly season here, big black fuzzy flies, they all emerge at once this time of year

What's with all the bugs
Whatwouldscullydo · 07/05/2022 17:32

Omg that's them!!

I read recently that flying insects have declined by something like 60% in recent years ☹️

Re. Birdshit - I have an open porch with a roof but no walls. The window of the loo, which is right in under the roof with literally no perching opportunities above it has a huge shit splattered over it this week. I deliberately make my garden wildlife friendly, and leave seed heads for the birds over winter etc. I love seeing them, but I fear I have offended someone. The loo window seems personal and deliberate 👀

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/05/2022 17:42

60 % 😩

Ok.i.apologise I will not be complaining about walking through giant swarms of gnats again

I too have a rather " wild" garden to encourage bees/bugs.

I just seem to get ants nests and snails amd slugs though

SoManyTshirts · 07/05/2022 17:45

If you have seagulls locally they are well capable of the personal and deliberate. I imagine it takes some effort to poo vertically up my French windows at close range - vertical back wall above so definitely a steep ascent!

daveyfish · 07/05/2022 17:45

Thought it would be😀 they emerge around 25 th April (st mark’s day) - adults only around about a week, mate, lay their eggs in the soil and die - short and sweet

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 07/05/2022 17:48

I recently drove from southern Germany to the UK in a Mini. I had to stop more often to clear the windscreen of dead bugs than I did for fuel. Either I am single-handedly responsible for the decline in bug population, or there are currently quite a lot of bugs out there.😂

Every year I get a load of fly things hatch either out the door mat or the front garden that cover my front window. Then they just go
