Doctors reception who obviously thinks she’s medically trained!

I am in the process of changing GP surgeries.
I filled out the online form, then received a text asking me to pop in with some forms of ID and book a new patient health check appointment.
I went in to the surgery yesterday. Explained to the receptionist that I had received the text. She took copies of my ID. I then asked to book in the new patient health check appointment and she said ‘Oh you only need to do that if you have any health concerns’. I explained that I did and would like to make the appointment please. She asked me what the concerns were, didn’t really want to discuss my health issues in front of a busy waiting room (and in hindsight I shouldn’t have) but explained I had recently done an at home diabetes test and it came up with a high result. She then said ‘Oh God those tests are notoriously inaccurate, it’s highly unlikely that you have diabetes’. I said ‘Well I do have symptoms, hence the reason I did the test!’. She looked me up and down then replied ‘Mmm, well I will pop your details on the system, you should be registered in a week or so, bye’. And that was that!
I will definitely make the appointment (hopefully via one of the other receptionists) next week but am getting more irritate the more I think about it. How the hell does she know if I have diabetes or not? I think it was very unprofessional for her to have voiced an opinion and she may something like this to someone else who would actually take her word for it.

She had no right to do that I'd report her. I once had a receptionist refuse to let me see a doctor because pregnancy isn't an illness and it was highly unlikely I was miscarrying, I was just being anxious. I was miscarrying, nothing could have been done but am still furious 💐

Moodycow78 that is just awful, what is wrong with some of them? Think they get a little drunk with power!

Why not think about it from the other POV? It's a shit job where you get loads of abuse for barely above minimum wage. She almost certainly couldn't offer you an appointment on the spot if you weren't registered but probably would have gone out of her way to get you something if it was really urgent. Hence asking what you needed it for. It wasn't that urgent and she tried to reassure you home tests aren't always that accurate. You didn't get what you wanted and have to wait a week or two extra but hardly a big deal in terms of issues with GPs at the moment.

I think this is one of those 'don't hate the player, hate the game' situations. There's a context as to why GP receptionists are asking these kinds of questions, and it's to do with the shitty state of the NHS and extremely stretched community health services.

It's not always done as deftly as it might because, surprise surprise, the money isn't there for the training. So you're going to get some human clunkiness from some people because they basically haven't been sufficiently trained, and are having to do this 250 times a day with people who either shout at them, don't understand, or don't understand and then shout at them.

I've recently left working in a GP surgery after 13 years. I used to enjoy it but the last couple of years have been soul destroying (all for minimum wage too).
Anyway, the receptionist shouldn't have given her personal opinion on your suspected illness. Give it a week, until you're registered and book your new patient check. If they offer econsults, you can request it that way by choosing the admin option. That way you don't even have to speak to any receptionists.
