Anyone ever felt depressed driving through somewhere?

It was so odd!

I drove through the centre of somewhere yesterday at around 7.30pm.

I got this strange feeling, like a strong depressive state and low mood. It just felt really off! I have never felt like this anywhere in my life. The whole place 'just felt wrong'. And do you know what? I can't tell you why, I've no idea

I use to live in a rough part of east London. It's nothing like that. It just felt eerie

Newcastle
Jedburgh

I don't know Newcastle we'll but happened to go to Grey St - OMG amazing Georgian Crescent right in the centre.

If you’re interested in this, read about psychogeography, it’s a concept based on how certain places and buildings can affect the moods of humans, positively or negatively. There’s also the concept of ley lines, IIRC.

I was diverted from the motorway through Paisley - the first part all the ground floor windows had mesh on them.

MintyGreenDream · 07/05/2022 17:42

Sheffield City centre

Autienotnaughtie · 07/05/2022 17:44

Milton Keynes strange place

I've lived absolute all over, including in some very dodgy areas, and the one place which gave me the absolute creeps was a tiny twee little village (just a few houses and a church) in the countryside near Oxford. I'm not remotely woo but it just had a vibe, especially around the church (I normally love old churches).

I feel this way on Snakes Pass! No idea why, it's lovely to look at... I just feel wrong whenever I've gone through it. Like others have said, I've suddenly felt anxious and a low mood, like a weight is sat on my chest and I feel hollow almost (don't know how to describe it). Totally dandy once I'm off it! Weird! I've always just guessed it was to do with the air pressure or something.

@Eranzer
I'd imagine that's due to the Moors Murders by Ian Brady. Several of his victims were found near Snakes Pass and it can feel very melancholy

Larne in Northern Ireland and parts of Cheltenham.

Koh Samui is grim. Or at least it was when I went in 2001. Had a real darkness about it. Couldn’t wait to leave. To be fair, I found a lot of the Thai islands left me cold.

Thailand has a horrible, seedy vibe in general I think.

I agree with this and I grew up in one. I think of them as plastic villages. It’s something to do with London being where the action is and sucking the life out of the surrounding areas.

Yes plastic villages! everything about them feels so self conscious. That’s most of Surrey, Reading etc

Wintersgirl · 07/05/2022 19:07

Come on, not all of Surrey is plastic, Chiddingfold, Godalming, Shere, Haslemere, Cranleigh are really lovely..

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 07/05/2022 19:13

This topic comes up tom time to time on MN. Something to do with lay lines?

Ridiculous comment about Surrey - the vast majority of it isn’t plastic at all

Just like the Pp above who mentioned the whole of London as giving them dread 🤔

for me it’s Somerset and Gloucester

Organictangerine · 07/05/2022 19:17

we’re talking about vibes which is very subjective so you can’t say ‘Surrey isn’t plastic’ if that’s the vibe I get from it

to me it feels self conscious and a bit unimaginative

a place you live to commute and live in the right catchment areas etc

So saying a whole city is out of order but a whole county is fine 😂

Yes, I am glad this phenomena has been identified here! I get a flat feeling driving through some places - when there's no obvious reason to. I say to self - "no I couldn't live here" - and I can't figure out why I couldn't live here, but know if I had to I'd be depressed. These aren't run down areas as such ...

Goldenbear · 07/05/2022 19:32

Minehead, specifically the area where Butlins is. We were looking for a beach near Exeter and stumbled across this part of Minehead. We parked up and my DH paid to park all day why I went ahead to the beach with the kids. It was really horrible, even the kids felt uneasy. Before my husband had even reached us I had turned around with them, headed back to the car and said it would be worth driving another 40 mins to a beach I knew was good. So we did that.

SingingSands · 07/05/2022 19:33

Had to spend a day in Luton once. It was the most depressing town centre I've ever visited.

Summersuniscoming · 07/05/2022 19:35

Yes, a seaside town in Yorkshire and a spa town in Derbyshire.
The seaside town is very popular and I've heard nothing but good about it. I felt really low there. The spa town also has visitors too and quite popular, again, not for me. Although there has been a decline in the shops in the town centre so maybe that's why.
I've heard people say on here they get weird vibes from another popular place in Derbyshire too, but we like it and go fairly often.

Fleahag · 07/05/2022 19:57

Obviously Rotherham to

MintyGreenDream · 07/05/2022 20:00

On the motorway that passes the Saddleworth Moor. For obvious reasons.

mommandme · 07/05/2022 20:33

"The whole of the Stroud Valley - all the way from Chalford to Stonehouse. Grim, suffocating, oppressive, hemmed in, depressing in the extreme. Despite its green credentials and popularity with 'luvvies' and arty types it is a shit hole of a place and, despite having been born there, nothing, but nothing, would induce me to return!"

Yes, Stroud is my neck of the woods ish. Not too far from me. But I totally do not get the love for Stroud on Mumsnet. I find it totally depressing too. Avoid it like the plague. Ciren is just a million times nicer.

Also agree with those who said Plymouth.
