Desperate for shower, leg in cast, help?!

Had ankle surgery Tuesday, an in an aircast boot, have a cast protector but going to have to sit on stool in bath as we've got an in shower bath.

I had a wash and washed my hair yesterday but I'm desperate for a shower. Any hints? I do have a Zimmer frame to help but really want to manage without DH's help, I am not made to be dependant!

You can get waterproof covers I think?

RampantIvy · 07/05/2022 09:10

Can you have a bath instead and stick your leg on the end of the bath?

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 07/05/2022 09:12

Been told absolutely no bath, and I wouldn't be able to get up again.

I have a waterproof cover, is more the logistics of getting into and out of bath with only one leg!

I fully expect to be told it's more hassle than it's worth and stick to showers

You can get waterproof leg covers on Amazon. They have a really thick band of elastic round the top

If you haven't got a walk in shower, I think you're just going to have to accept help, annoying as it is!

Summerholidayorcovidagain · 07/05/2022 09:15

Bin bag taped at the top and a Croc on so you don't slip?

Mrsjayy · 07/05/2022 09:16

Can you sit on the side of the bath qnd swing yourself over to the shower seat ? Your husband might need to supervise incase you fall, but you might need to be dependent on him for a bit longer.

tiredanddangerous · 07/05/2022 09:16

Don't attempt to get in and out of the bath on your own op, you'll end up with another limb in plaster!

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 07/05/2022 09:17

Buy a shower board for the top of the bath and sit on that with a cover on the cast

Chasingsquirrels · 07/05/2022 09:17

Just accept your DHs help!

My DP currently has an air-cast boot due to a torn achilles tendon and his insistence that he doesn't need any assistance (which would clearly make his luce easier) is very frustrating. I love him and want to help.

sickofthisnonsense · 07/05/2022 09:17

Friends or family got a walk in shower you could borrow?

OutDamnedSpot · 07/05/2022 09:18

Twist it around.

If DH had his leg in a cast, would you want to help him, or would you want him to struggle alone?

Depends how flexible you are, but couldn’t you act as if you’re mounting a horse? Swing the leg in cast over first so you’re straddling the edge, then turn inward and bring your other leg over and into the bath & you’re in.

To get out, a similar strategy. Utilise the handles on the bath (if you have any), cast out first, weight in bath then elegantly exit lol.

When I have had knee in splint following dislocation this is what’s worked for me. It may or may not be wise, but understand wanting a shower. Obviously you could also “sponge bath” instead

Good luck and hope you recover quickly!

Get your dh to take you to your local leisure centre and ask to use one of the showers attached to the gym.

schnubbins · 07/05/2022 09:32

I have lots of experience with this due to multiple ankle surgeries , the last one being 2015 when I was three months non weight bearing but 6 months in a boot.In the beginning I used to have a bath and put my leg up on the side but that does meaning heaving yourself up with your upper body. That is done most easily when the water is left out of the bath and with a rubber non slip mat.Other than that a shower stool and the cast boot wrapped in plastic bin bags and lots of duct tape. Leg straight out and shower head positioned away from said leg .Dry yourself off while sitting on the stool and then dry the bath and shower around you before attempting to get out doing a lot of slow calculated moves Its worth it and you do get used to it.

Thank you. There's no handles on our bath sadly. I'm going to try the mounting a horse technique, I have a stool similar to the one linked but doesn't swivel but am hoping it will suffice.

We are members of a gym but the changing rooms are at the other end of the building, I couldn't make it that far yet. That's the plan for when I'm a bit further on though, actually kept the membership going for that reason.

And, DH will be sat on the loo for moral (and physical!) support

Thank you

oh and probably relevant but have suspected EDS and v weak joints with a tendency to pop out, can't manage hopping on crutches as shoulders aren't stable, so definitely couldn't heave myself out of the bath.

I think, pathetic as it is, it's the fact you can't just 'do' anything; it all takes 4 times as long and you have to plan it all first

You need a limbo cover from Amazon.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/05/2022 10:19

To the poster who responded I would be out of order for raising a filthy bathroom with my adult son. Yes of course I would because keeping it clean is as much his responsibility as his partners. Whatever happened to equality.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/05/2022 10:19

Wrong thread apologies.

DD (19) had ankle surgery last year & we only have a tiny bathroom with shower over bath. We bought a Limbo cast cover & borrowed a bath board a bit like this from the occupational therapy team (hopefully pic will post!). It worked well enough - DD needed help to manoeuvre in and out to start with & we brought a folding chair into the bathroom too so she only had to get from one to the other.

Good luck!! DD was so much happier when she could manage a shower!

I did it! Sat on edge of bath then slid into stool in bath using frame for support. DH then took boot off and I put cover over bandages. Swung legs in then had shower, had to hold it but that was fine.

Getting out dried cover, swung leg out then took cover off and put boot back on (with DH help). Then dried rest of me and used frame to stand back up.

Other than getting boot on and off was actually much easier than I thought and feel so much better now I'm properly clean, a flannel wash just isn't the same.

Thank you!
