19mo climbing out of cot

Help! This morning, DD2 proved that she can climb out of her cot. We will be putting a gate on her door ASAP but my question is do I now move her to a toddler bed? She lifts herself up and goes head first over the side so I don’t want her to land on her head if she does it with no one there to catch her.

Anyone else have a climber?

DS3 has never slept in a cot. He’s always been in a single floor bed that’s not far off the ground. He’s only rolled off accidentally twice in his life. And it didn’t hurt because it’s so near the ground.

He’s 20 months and can sleep in any bed now without a problem. We recently went on holiday and he was fine in his own double bed.

Mine went in a single bed when they could climb out the cot.

Yep time for a toddler bed. You can put sides on them to help prevent her rolling out. But mine fell out of bed quite a lot and were never injured.

Yep time for toddler bed and toddler proofing the room

Sigh… DD1 wasn’t a climber so went into a bed much later. We have a toddler bed somewhere so time to dig it out.

She’s chosen a weekend that we’re busy! Joy of now finding some time to sort that. 😫

DS climbed out of his cot at 10 months old, before he could walk.
I put him in a toddler bed and he never fell out of it.

Why not just go straight to a single bed with a bed guard? I don’t see the point of toddler beds.

For the right now is the room baby proof? If so just take the mattress out of the cot and use that as a floor bed for the minute

Normally I’d agree with you but DD2 has the smallest bedroom and a toddler bed is better space wise. We also already have one (given to us) so may as well use it.

Need to quickly get a stair gate on the door and make sure cables are out of reach. I also need to go through her bookshelf and remove any she needs to read with an adult because she’ll rip the pages.

My DS did this. He went into a single bed that was low down. He used to be able to jump his cot to the light switch!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/05/2022 11:48

We’ve taken the side off her cot for now as the quickest solution and we’ve removed anything she can hurt herself with or break.

Little monkey!

If she is a climber make sure all furniture in her room like book shelves, wardrobe etc are attached to the wall. If she tries to climb them, they could topple over with her underneath

They are attached.

I’m so tempted to make DH sleep on the floor in her room to be there when she wakes up but I know that would be a slippery slope.

I had a climber, one nap time I could hear him screaming, went into his room to find him stuck whilst trying to get out of the cot, he'd managed to get his belly over the top of the cot, but his bum and weighted nappy were counter balancing him so he was swaying at the top. Side came off and gate went up same day. 🤦‍♀️
