Consequences for Year 8 Head of Year detention?

DS13’s teacher had just rung saying he's got a 1.5 hour HoY detention on Monday for failing to attend his detention this week. Original misdemeanor was throwing a pen back to a friend in the classroom. He then didn't attend the detention for this(he 'claims' he rearranged with the teacher she said no way) so has now escalated.

He chose this school, an Academy with v rigid rules, so it's totally on him.

What, if any, conséquences would you implement at home? I can't think straight any interested to hear how others manage things such as this

Wouldn’t double up on punishment.just reiterate behaviour and consequences.

jmh740 · 06/05/2022 17:18

I think I would just talk to him and tell him that you are concerned about him lying and explain that due to this the situation has escalated, but he's already been punished at school I wouldn't punish him at home too.

Axahooxa · 06/05/2022 17:18

I wouldn’t do anything else at home. That’s enough for what he did. I’d leave it to the school and not talk about it again.(I say this as a teacher and a parent.)

None, he’s being dealt with appropriately at school.

Just don’t say anything to undermine what the school is doing re discipline.

Express your disappointment, and the hope and expectation that they will do the right thing, and accept the punishment on Monday. Stay calm and non-confrontational, because that won't do any good at all.

Time to get tougher would be if they don't turn up on Monday either.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 06/05/2022 17:22

Thank you. I told the teacher within his earshot that I fully supported the escalation and was disappointed as had been lied to, so both sides know we support school. Also that the biggest issue is him lying about the initial detention.

Think we'll leave it with school. Him and this teacher absolutely hate each other. Still no excuse though

Yes leave it with school. Your right that the lying about it was worse than the crime. But really was throwing a pen worthy of a detention in the first place, probably not

balalake · 06/05/2022 18:25

I think you have made the right decision.

BertieBotts · 06/05/2022 18:29

I would do nothing but I would express very unimpressed front to DC and say that was silly wasn't it not to go to the first detention.

OutlookStalking · 06/05/2022 18:33

Leave it with school. Its a school issue and it was dealt with there. Dont let it grow into a sense of shame/you be the one on his side cheering for him to do well, not the one criticizing.
