A young couple, they are speaking so loud everyone can hear them. They aren't even near me.
Why are some people so lacking in awareness? Its weird.

The trouble with public transport is it's public!

Well I can't really get het up about loud people on a train!

Mumblechum0 · 06/05/2022 09:12

We often notice that some people just seem to have no awareness of other people, eg on country walks some families are clearly audible a quarter of a mile across fields.

some people are just naturally loud!

I had a whole family chattering away in the Quiet carriage (it wasn't a full train), phones blaring kids shows, right next to the Quiet sign.

Luckily I had my headphones so with noise cancelling I couldn't hear them while I worked but the lack of self awareness was astounding.

General noise in other carriages I couldn't get worked up about though.

This!!
I am becoming increasingly amazed at what people consider is acceptable in public these days. It feels like everyone has forgotten how to behave in the last 2 years.

I spent 3 hours on a train yesterday putting up with kid's videos. The parents were using headphones.

How annoying, I rarely take the train in the mornings but I love how very quiet it is when I do. People!

Some people seem to have no awareness or sense. I was on a train recently and a woman was having a loud work related phone call that should’ve been confidential. From her conversation I know the firm she works at, that she does something HR related, the first name of an employee and the details of their ongoing HR complaint…

Some people are just stupid.

A train conductor told me before - to my astonishment - that the quiet carriage actually just means you can't use a phone. It sounds like this family were also breaking that rule but apparently as long as no devices are involved you can hold a party in the quiet carriage!

I used to commute by train & you could always tell if visitors or people going on holiday etc got on, they all seemed to be happy to get on the 6:36!

My DH used to work with a man who
was similar - loud phone calls, always top volume doing the great “I am”. One day, they got off a train and a man approached them. “You’re Simon Peters, aren’t you?”, he asked my DH’s colleague. “Yes, yes, I am”, said colleague, puffed up with pride. “Well,” said the man, “I can tell you that I now know more about you than I ever could have imagined. I know where you work, what deal you’re working on, what you think of the bankers, what your kids are called and what you’re having for dinner. And I hope I never have to sit behind you again.”

It went down in the annals of that company’s history…..🤣 Good for that bloke on the train, I say!!

I was on a flight recently with 3 young adults sitting behind me. My 3 yo behaved perfectly well and slept throughout the flight whereas the 3 lads behind me talked to each other really loudly with 'fucks' thrown in every second word coming out and who shagged who from there mouths. God forbid my 3yo son cried or had his ears blocked with me trying to soothe or distract him with a low volume iPad, people would complain about the noise coming out of kids than people who are drunk in broad daylight on flights, trains and restaurants or grown ass adults who can't control the volume of their own voice.

Inklingpot · 06/05/2022 10:09

When I used to commute regularly noise on trains was something that properly ground my gears. People watching videos with no headphones - hate. People playing phone games which make annoying noises every few seconds - hate. People who monologue at their travel companion the whole way - hate. Loud phone conversations - hate.

No-one’s telling you to be silent, just have some consideration and self-awareness. Unfortunately, it feels more and more that a certain type of person basically just thinks ‘fuck everyone else, they should wear earplugs if they don’t want to hear me doing Duolingo at 7am’.

@Alarae

They may have been allocated tickets in the quiet carriage. That happened to me a number of time when booking 1 adult, 2/3 children, and I always found it ridiculous. On more than one occasion I asked the guard if I could move seats (tickets with specific seats) and they said no because then my tickets weren't valid.
I always felt very aware about any noise we made then, although this was before the days of watching on phones etc so it would have just been normal chatter.

That's not excusing children watching phones without headphones-I'd say they should have headphones if they're watching on the train, but they may have not chosen to be there.

One thoughtless person I came across was on a train into London where someone got on with their music blaring loudly. After a few minutes someone leant across to them and offered them some headphones. They said "oh thank you. I forgot my headphones and couldn't think what to do". Obviously not listen to loud music wasn't a possibly option in their head.
