What's Sherringham like for a break with young children?

Have never been to Norfolk before. A lot of places (like Wells next the sea) have limited availability for a last minute break. Found a house in Sherringham. We are after somewhere pretty (not tacky 😬), fairly quiet, nice to wander around, some cafes, restaurants etc and things to do with a toddler. For reference we like Southwold type seaside places - would Sherringham suit us?

I did think I'd like to live there but the talk of no to Tesco just confirms what it would really be like to live in a small town in Norfolk.

LOL, you might need to do more research before moving to any small town in Norfolk.

The opposition to Tesco was not about lowering the tone. It was about the potential threat, in a small place, to many small family owned shops and businesses. And also because at one time Tesco wanted the site that is used for the weekly market, and town car park at others.

This was also at a time when Young’s fish and crab processing factory, just along the coast, was being closed and taking 100s of jobs out of the area.

There is plenty of coastal and rural deprivation in Norfolk. Shops (including Budgens in Holt) are expensive and far flung. Lots of people did want a Tesco… and look! They got one!

Actually shops have been closing in Sheringham. What was the lovely big double fronted stationers and bookshop? The Model shop. Various small businesses quietly going. More charity shops.

But Sheringham retains its charm and it’s authenticity as a town for locals.

(Possibly because the moneyed arrivvees paying huge house prices go for Blakeney, Burnham Market, etc)

We had a lovely week in Sheringham when I was young. We rented a cottage just off the high street called Fisherman’s Cottage. It was near the arcade which as kids we thought was brilliant. Over the road was the most fantastic gift shop selling all manner of holiday souvenirs and I spent a lot of pocket money in there.

Gutted to hear that the Splash swimming pool is no more, got lots of happy memories from there.

We also went to the Shire horse centre, the Muckleburgh collection of military vehicles as my dad was a big fan and I seem to remember we spent a lot of time eating at the Lobster pub over the road.

Happy days.

Bertram Watts.

The small EoE Co-op shop went too, as did Hastings fruit and veg shop and the fudge shop (or did it just 'gentrify'?!).

Not a shop as such, but I read that Sheringham's post office (at the back of Starlings) was under threat as the postmaster was retiring. Does anybody know if the former post office building (near Barney's) is in use? Do they use it for sorting mail or other non-customer-facing purposes? It must be a very valuable prime property for redevelopment, if not.

Talking of really prime locations, it looks like the old Shannocks hotel site is at long last finally being redeveloped.
