Foodbank donations - if you’re able.

Please can I remind you to donate to the foodbank if you’re able.

I volunteer at our local one (after receiving food from there when things were tough in the past) and we had an 8tonne deficit of food in April. If this continues then by September there will be no surplus and all donations will be going back out again immediately, and won’t reach demand.

I know money is tight for everyone but if you’ve got a spare bit and can donate then it would be massively helpful.

I can’t afford to donate any more I’m afraid.

Sirzy · 04/05/2022 19:59

I am still giving but sadly can’t give as much. I feel guilty about it as I know need is increasing for them but like many I have felt the prices rises too much.

It’s a huge problem isn’t it ? I do donate some cereal, pasta and tinned food when shopping. I probably only spend a couple of quid but it does help .

Gosh! thanks for the reminder. Whenever I am in Sainsbury's I always look at the food bank thing and think I must bring in some food next time. I always used to pop in some tampons/towels as well. I will look through my cupboards when I get home.

What are currently the most needed items, OP, where you are?

God it makes me so angry that we need to do this.

Fizbosshoes · 05/05/2022 08:14

Last time I was in sainsburys I got some items for the food bank but not all were food.@PandaOrLion Can I check other items are needed...? I put washing powder in, but now wondering if that's a silly idea if people either don't have washing machines or can't afford to run them...? Blush

SpindleInTheWind · 05/05/2022 08:22

Personally I think washing powder is a good shout, especially if it can be used for hand washing.

Food bank use is supposed to be a short term stop-gap not a long term thing (though the government seem unaware of this).

Also many users will have caring needs or duties that mean they need to wash sheets etc often, come what may.

I don't know about anyone else but the council block my friend has a flat in has a laundry on the ground floor, it's recently become free to use.

Even if someone doesn't have a washer then hand washing still needs a detergent.

If you search for your local food bank you will get a list of what they need and what they are well stocked with

Or you can do a bank transfer so the food bank can buy what they need.

PandaOrLion · 07/05/2022 10:39

Sorry, just saw the replies.
Our most needed items are tinned veg/fruit and tinned potatoes. They have a lot of pasta and beans but that’s about it.
Echo what others have said - you can search your area to see what is needed.
I feel fortunate to be able to donate now as I know it wasn’t possible before. We also give sanitary products too, and ours takes small packets of washing tablet or powder and washing up liquid.
