Theatre tickets, HOW MUCH?!

DS2 has autism and his biggest pleasure in life is going to musicals, so we go as often as we can.
He really wants to see Cabaret (we've been before when it was a touring production) at the KitKat club...and his 25th birthday is coming up.

Soooo I went to book tickets this evening. For decent seats (no point going in the cheap seats as we both have lousy eyesight) they start at £200 EACH.!!!!!!!

Yes I booked (because he will be beyond thrilled) Yes my credit card just took the hit... but that is just ridiculous.. as a one off I will do it because he never asks for anything and deserves it, but dear God I need to go lie down now!

Makes it so unaffordable for most people most of the time :(

Surely glasses for you both would be cheaper if your eyesight is really that bad? I went to the theatre this weekend and sat in the absolute gods but thanks to my glasses I was able to see perfectly well.

Cabaret isn't just a musical though, the whole set up is to be incredibly up market.

rookiemere · 04/05/2022 18:25

Cabaret is so pricey because of the intimate nature of the theatre. I was lucky enough to go on opening night and paid £90 for a back stall ticket and still had an amazing view.
It's an immersive performance so you'll gain a lot by being near the front.

If it makes you feel better, I've been and had the same reaction to the ticket price. But just ten minutes in I was thinking it was completely worth it. You will have an amazing time and it's bought now so just look forward to it Smile

Are you on one of the little tables 'in' the kit Kat club or a normal theatre seat? I remember there was a bit of interaction with people in those tables from the cast so if he would hate that I would have a word with the theatre in advance if you're in a table seat to stop it happening!

motogirl · 04/05/2022 18:29

It's more than just a performance, it's an immersive experience apparently. I looked and all the tickets were £250 before tge cast change.

£150 is common now. I go to my local theatre instead which if I buy after 6pm on the night of the performance, singles are all £13 even ones that originally cost £100, dp isn't keen on the theatre so it's perfect

Can you get in free as a carer?

StillMedusa · 04/05/2022 21:42

We both wear glasses but struggle with theatre lighting... and for DS2 being close is what makes him rigid with excitement (he's perfectly well behaved ) Grin so front stalls are what we do. Yes we have table seats (but not the booze add on!!)
I hadn't thought about the carers option facepalm I do that for local theatre but wouldn't think about it for London... I'll remember to check next time we go there!
prisscalledwanda Thanks... I feel better about the price now. I wish we could have gone when ER and JB were starring but just couldn't get seats!

Theatre tickets are sooo expensive now. I love going to the West send, travelling to London for the day etc, but the prices are making it prohibitive, so started looking at more local theatres.

Cindrella has just announced its closure and apparently was loosing £100000 per week.

Jagley · 04/05/2022 21:48

Definitely look at the carers option next time. If websites don't mention it always ring and check. Most theatres offer them .

WeeFecker · 04/05/2022 21:52

@Riverlee yikes I saw Cinderella a couple of months back and it seemed pretty packed, perhaps the losses were related to covid closures? Then again I did get the tickets half price

MyJobisNotOuting · 04/05/2022 21:56

My DDog decided to stick his nose in the open side door and have a look last week. The set up looked great.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/05/2022 21:57

London theatre is just hideously expensive. Especially the big musicals. Thank your lucky stars he doesn't want to go to the opera op!

Filthycop · 04/05/2022 23:11

I saw it first week in £30 seats up top back and it was amazing - then again the last week of the first cast but in table seats up front with the champagne and food. DH is in a wheel chair so I got a carer ticket and although it was still not cheap, it was much cheaper than it should have been - it was amazingly worth it.

I can honestly say it was amazing - just about the best thing have ever seen in theatre ever. DH was blown away as well. Really is amazing. Get there early for the preshow.

I am going in for the lottery on Today Tix every day for £25 tickets so I can see it with the new cast.

Fizbosshoes · 04/05/2022 23:23

I bought DD tickets for a show at a regional theatre for Christmas, and we went a couple of weeks ago. I bought mid price tickets that were £55-60 and our seats were pretty good, bit probably a third of the seats in the stalls (£60-90 each) were unsold.

Filthycop · 04/05/2022 23:25

London theatre can be done cheaply - have seen so far this year

Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, To Kill a Mockingbird, Cluedo, Private Peaceful, & Juliet, Heathers the Musical, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, The Davinci Code, Bat Out of Hell the Musical. All since Christmas and most of the tickets were less than £25 - some less than £10. Some good, some not so much

Booking when things are first announced, signing up with seat filling sites like Central Tickets or Show Film First, being willing to go to places like Bromley or Wimbledon rather than West End. Getting the Today Tix app for lottery and 'rush tickets'. There are some NHS perk sites that offer seat filling opportunities.

It can be done but it is like sale shopping - you have to plug away and spot the bargains.

Tinkerblonde1 · 04/05/2022 23:28

I want to see Harry Potter but as its two performances I couldn't justify it.

Saw and Juliet instead. It was brilliant!
