Did your toddler lose interest in books?

Did anyone else's toddler "go off" reading books? And if so did they return to enjoying reading?

We've read to our DD since she was born and up until around 18 months she absolutely loved books and actively went to pick them up to "read" with us or by herself. She had a lot of books of all kinds and sometimes we would spend an hour going through a pile of books together. Now the books are glanced at, and occasionally she will let me read one with her but on the whole her attention is off on more physical or "exciting" activities. She also watches screens more now (though we don't allow it excessively, but difficult to prohibit fully).

She is at a stage where she is very very energetic and exploratory of her surroundings and so I don't know if this is just a phase? I really value reading and want her to grow up reading books.

Is there anything else I can do except keep trying to encourage? Is it just a toddler phase?

Mine gets bored of the same books at home for sure, but after a trip to the library finds new favourites to read over and over… and over and over 😐

Yes mine did, never got it back and we tried and tried.

However dd1 is a bright and thriving year 7 with good vocabulary and reading skills and comprehension. She just hates reading!

My DS goes.through phases of loving a string of books read to him during the day. He does it to get attention I've noticed. He will bring them to us from his bookshelf. Sometimes he'll not sit through them and sometimes he'll sit through 4 or 5. Then weeks will pass where he's not interested. I expect it's a phase but I think of you want to spark interest the library visit or getting a book with the supermarket shop sounds like a good idea.

We read to him every night at bedtime and he always wants the story.

Thank you. I think introducing a proper bedtime story is a good idea. We are still at the stage of transitioning from milk bottle down into cot. But we are about to switch to milk in a cup. Perhaps at the same time we do that I could integrate a story alongside the sippy cup.
