Birth certificate Typo

Just recently been looking at my sons birth certificate and realised that the mothers place of birth section has a typo. The town is spelt wrong (missing letter). Have looked on maps and there's no town named what it is spelt as so it's definitely a spelling error and not a different town.

This was issued 7 years ago so I really should have noticed before but apart from using it for passports and to show the school, it has been filed away and I'll shamelessly blame the tiredness of having a newborn for not realising at the time.

Does anyone know if I can or if its worth contact the registrars office and trying to get this changed? Or would you just leave it as it is.

My husbands address is mis-spelled on my Dsd's birth cert and it makes him smile a lot! On a serious note it may become an issue if your child applies for a passport for ID purposes so I would check with the registar.

My DD2's birth certificate wasn't signed! I only realised when applying for her passport. I made an appointment with the registrar and they rectified the error.

Just wondering what you decided to do as I have a similar situation? Did you get it amended? Is the amendment a note in the margin of the certificate? My son is 8 🙈

My name is misspelt on mine! My daft dad put the male spelling of my middle name rather than the female spelling and my mum didn't notice it either! I've never changed it but I always use the female version on any documents (including my passport) and never had a problem.

I actually left it as I was going on holiday so needed to take the certificate with me as we have different surnames and I didn't want to be without it or anything.

I have just now though, emailed the registration department at my county council with a pic and explanation of the issue so I'll report back when they get back to me.
Have you done anything about yours yet?

They got back to me and said there will be a £75 fee to correct it 😱
I can't pay that so will probably just leave it.

Wow, £75?! Thought it'd be half that!

TheFlis12345 · 18/08/2022 16:04

Cheeky of them to charge for their error!

Dontstoprunning · 18/08/2022 17:13

It's so expensive isn't it.
I suppose, although it's the registrars error as in he mistyped it - I'm pretty sure they ask you to check all information is correct before they sign it so I must have agreed to it being correct.

I did think it would be about £20 purely to cover the admin time but £75 is obscene.

It wouldn't be changed either - it would have a note in the margin with the correct town of birth and date of correction.

You'd think they'd be super careful filling in such an important document.
My DDs passport had her name spelt wrongly in it (Goergina!) had all sorts of faff getting them to change it at the renewal.

hairymclaryforever · 18/08/2022 18:28

I would absolutely write back and say you aren't paying to fix THEIR error and that you need it sorted in case it causes issues in the future. Be persistent and insist it was their fault and therefore they can't charge you. Don't take no for an answer. Be a bitch but get what you need done
