Safest way to sell high value item on eBay?

Hi,

I have sold a painting on eBay for £5,000. I’m going to deliver it in person as the buyer is under 2 hours away. I was just wondering what the best way to accept payment is?

Obviously not PayPal. I’m a bit concerned about accepting cash in case it’s fake but is it possible to fake these new notes? Originally I thought bank transfer but I’ve read stories online about banks issuing charge backs after the buyer claims fraud or the buyer faking the entire bank transfer.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

eBay doesn't use Paypal for payments any more, but ebay payments. It's more secure for the seller as far as I can see and there's some sort of code to scan to prove collection (or delivery in person) now.

I recently sold a bike for a few hundred pounds, the buyer paid straight away and I was all ready to refund him and ask him to pay by bank transfer or cash on collection, but I looked into it and it seemed like I couldn't be scammed. I also googled the buyer and found that he was a business owner with his photograph on his practice website, so I was reassured when he turned up and I could link the man who collected the bike with an established business that I could visit if something went wrong.

I think new notes are a lot harder (or impossible?) to fake, but I'd be wary about accepting old notes as they're phasing those out now and I think that is an established way to get rid of old fakes into the system.

If the buyer pays by faster payments (ask them to do a test payment of £1 to prove that the payment is set up correctly and it also smooths security for the rest of the money, otherwise it might get held in security for several hours until it is released) and you log into your account on your phone and can see the money there, it can't be taken off you, from their point of view, once the money is gone, it is gone. That's why you have to jump through so many hoops to send money by bank transfer these days, the banks are trying to reduce refunds to people who say they've been scammed because they've been tricked into sending money to a fraudster.

how can they fake an entire bank transfer?

You log into your account on your bank app on your phone to check the amount went in. Can that be faked?

Bank transfer would be my first choice otherwise, Adyen doesn't take fees for that.

What is eBay charging you as sales fee, btw?

What type of payment did you specify on your listing?
