London from Saturday 11:30 to Sun 13:00, what underground cars?

Do I need a Visitors Oyster card or is contactless pay-as-you-go a cheaper option? I'll go with my 9-year-old daughter. Thanks.

Sorry for the stupid typo. I meant underground cards!

Pay as you go is the same price. Just touch in and out and your fare will be capped. Your daughter travels free.

DoItAfraid · 03/05/2022 13:58

Contactless just make sure you tap in and out at all points.

For more freedom buy a 1-day travelcard.

kirinm · 03/05/2022 13:59

You can use either. If you don't already have an oyster card, I wouldn't bother buying one because you'll need to pay for it and then add money to it once bought. There is a cap per day if you use your debit card (and the same cap applies on the oyster).

@DoItAfraid

This is a dumb question because I live in London and use the tubes. What is the benefit of tapping in at different stations? I've never understood it.

crumpet · 03/05/2022 14:02

is there an advantage to Oyster cards nowadays?

DoItAfraid · 03/05/2022 14:06

if you dont tap in at that the various stations they charge you a day travel card fare at the end of the day.

i use a different route to avoid zone 1 so if i dont tap at w croydon and canada water i dont get the saving.

DoItAfraid · 03/05/2022 14:08

@crumpet if your oyster is registered and you top it up, if it gets lost you can recover your balance.

Not quite sure what you mean, but at most stations you have to tap to get through the barrier.

Of a barrier is open, or there is no barrier, and you walk through without tapping, the system doesn’t know where you entered it so it will charge you the highest fare possible. (Eg your train starts in zone 6 but you got on in zone 3. You tap on exit in zone 1 and it charges you for a zone 6 to zone 1 journey). You can also be fined for fare dodging of you haven’t tapped in- I witnessed a guy getting fined during a random check in my train this morning.

Only if buying weekly/monthly/annual tickets. Otherwise, contactless all the way.

TR888 · 03/05/2022 15:56

This is really useful, thanks! Not sure what you mean about tapping in and out, do you mean you tap your contactless as you exit a station?

Yes you tap going in and then again when you exit so you get charged the right fare

BreadAndWater · 03/05/2022 15:58
