What SPF sun protection do you use? & do you tan or burn easily?

I am a red head & would usually use factor 20. I don't tend to burn with this on but guidelines state we should all wear a minimum of spf30.

So even if you tan easy do you still wear spf30 or go lower?

I burn very easily, and wear f50 all year round with reapplications, and in the sun I will have full body covering clothes, a wide brimmed hat and avoid sitting in the sun. My skin does not like the sun at all, even with the best sun cream on.
Dh and ds tan at the glimpse of sun, and wear spf 30 with 50 if we will be outside all day

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 03/05/2022 12:57

My mum once waved me off to Zante with some dodgy factor 6 that didn’t have a word of English on the bottle Shock but now I’m a sensible SPF 30+ girl

Flowersandwine12 · 03/05/2022 12:57

Red head who burns here, I wear factor 30 and 50 on my face all year. I'd probably wear F50 if I went abroad but haven't for years. I make sure I reapply every couple of hours. My dds have sensitive skin and they don't get on with F50 (even ones for sensitive skin) so I use 30 on any visible skin on them to

Brown hair, tan easily i always use Factor 30, on holiday in hot countries i start on Factor 50, then drop down to 30 then to 15 but never go below 15. DD tans very easily and has never burnt but she is slavered in Factor 50 and regularly topped up during the day.

Sunshineandteacakes · 03/05/2022 13:00

I always use 50. I never tan though.

Fleur405 · 03/05/2022 13:08

I have dark hair but very fair skin (my mum is a redhead …. my health visitor keeps asking me if I’m anaemic!). I don’t burn easily here but would burn on holiday. I use factor 30 here and 50 when on holiday but I tend to try and stay out of the sun because I hate my freckles!

Repetitivebeats · 03/05/2022 13:09

SPF50 on my face always (unless I'm spending the day indoors), SPF30 on my body if I'm going to be outside.
I have freckles, and hyper-pigmentation on my face so it never really tans, just goes blotchy. I do usually pick up a tan on my arms. I have classic milk bottle legs that never tan.
I spent all of Saturday outside watching DS play sport. It was a clear but breezy day so I need a jacket all day, but still managed to burn my parting, and my hands! So I clearly need to be more careful.
I wish I could wear hats but I look like an egg whatever style I wear so I've given up with them.

Fleur405 · 03/05/2022 13:09

Oh and I’ve literally never had a tan in my life despite travelling round Southern Europe for months and visiting south east Asia and the Caribbean.

lljkk · 03/05/2022 13:27

My dad is a redhead, so are 3 of his siblings.
We all grew up in Southern California and they all live in sunny places, still.
They don't take half the precautions described here.

They are Happy with their choices.
In summer my dad does use high SPF but more importantly he gets in the shade when outside, and otherwise covers up: big hat, long sleeves.
The funny part is he & my step-mum also take lots of Vitamin D, even though they live in such a sunny place.

I live in cloudy UK. I don't burn easily. I prefer physical not chemical sunblocks so tends to be SPF 30+. However, I only apply it once a day when I think of it (summer) so it's actual net effect must work out as about SPF 5 (same as a regular thickness T-shirt).

lljkk · 03/05/2022 13:27

ps: my dad did get a tan one summer, ~1966, to his astonishment, lots of beach volleyball.

I had this trouble most of my life, always got rashes and prickly heat as a child/teen. It was definitely the cream, not the sun, as when I didn't use the cream, I was fine, but then of course did some damage to my skin. I think anything that clogged the skin was really reactive for me. My neck is particularly sensitive, and sadly hasn't done well as I have aged.

More recently I have found Ultrasun good, but also have used Amber Solaire for many years. Much frowned upon as it doesn't have ultra high UVA, but as a cream it is really light, and I don't react to it, so that's the one we use.

My dc are the same as I am to some extent. We use ultra sun too but also altruist is good and far cheaper!

Bimster · 03/05/2022 13:31

I tan easily and grew up using baby oil instead of suncream for maximum tanning 😱

Now I wear factor 30 on my face every day, summer or winter. In hot places I use factor 50 and a hat.

cdba88 · 03/05/2022 20:53

Blonde, don't tan. Use 50 on my face, ears, neck every day and 50 on the rest of my body when it's uncovered by clothes

iklboo · 03/05/2022 21:06

Never below 50. I burn very easily, especially my décolletage & shoulders.

LuaDipa · 03/05/2022 21:14

I’m dark haired and tan easily. My kids are the same, particularly ds who only has to glance at the sun to turn bronze. We all use factor 50, even at home in the UK. I’ve seen more people with sunburn at ds’s cricket matches on an overcast day in England than I ever have abroad.

WDTABNONONO · 03/05/2022 21:24

I ran a bit / burn a bit.
I use factor 30 usually but peak summer / mid day factor 50

TeddyTrucks · 03/05/2022 21:36

I have light brown hair and a complexion like a ghost and use 50+. DD 14 is a redhead and though she's a lot pinker than me 50+ seems to work for both of us. Otherwise we just go red then back to white. Tans have never been seen in our house 🤷🏻‍♀️

factor 30 moisturiser for every day.
factor 50 if I spend more than 30 min outside.

EatSleepReplete · 03/05/2022 21:52

This is the company I bought the hat from. They took a few days to arrive as they ship direct from Australia.

I burn really easily. I once burnt through the little holes in an umbrella. It's quite ridiculous really.

I tend to cover up as I hate the greasy feeling of sunscreen but last year bought a dry spray that actually is dry and not greasy. I go for minimum 30, but prefer 50.

Notjustabrunette · 03/05/2022 22:19

50 on my face, it’s a cream for your face and is less greasy. 30 on my body. Sometimes a rash vest if I can’t be bothered with all the suncream faff. Ive hah skin cancer so need to be careful. have recently been on holiday abroad and the amount of burnt look brits wandering about was ridiculous. Don’t skimp on the sun protection.

etulosba · 04/05/2022 00:26

Much frowned upon as it doesn't have ultra high UVA

Assuming you mean SPF, not UVA, the level of protection levels off once you get to around 20-25. Factor 50 doesn’t offer much more protection than 30.

What SPF sun protection do you use? & do you tan or burn easily?
fitflopqueen · 04/05/2022 00:56

On holiday now, fairish and can go red/burn. SPF 50 face and 30 body, get a good nice colour but need to do it slowly.
