Tranexamic acid or period delay hormone tablets for holiday? Heavy periods

Hi,

Can't remember the name of the hormone tablets - North something? But anyway, I've been prescribed them, a long with the Tranexamic Acid. Reason being, I have INSANELY heavy periods and I've worked out, I'm likely going to be due slap bang in the middle of my holiday next month. When I say heavy, I mean at the peak, needing to change super plus EXTRA tampon every 30 minutes, plus super pads.

I've never taken hormones before, apart from the morning after pill a couple of times in my teens, so I'm quite nervous tbh. I hear horror stories of awful, murderous style mood swings, terrible bloating and subsequent heavier than usual periods. Well, if my period is heavier, I honestly think I'll need medical assistance.

The Tranexamic Acid is for after my holiday, but I'm wondering whether I should just take this on my holiday instead of the hormone tablets, as I don't want to be a miserable cow on my holiday. I think I'd rather be on my period 🙄

Given they help thicken your blood and so increase your risk of clots, I don't think taking them around the time of flying is a good idea is it? The doctor gave me no warning of this.

Does anyone have any advice?

This is why I was considering taking the Tranexamic Acid on holiday just to lighten, rather than delay

As a heavy period sufferer I can say that trying to delay my period never worked at all so the best option for me was tranexamic acid.

Same here, any attempt to mess with my cycle is met with fierce resistance from my body, it will do what it bloody wants to do thanks, and throw in a couple of punishments to deter me from questioning it again!

For my upcoming holiday I'm going with tranx acid plus 1000mg ginger per day - the latter was recommended to me on here and the combination is far more effective for me than tranx alone.

And I emphatically second the suggestion of period pants as a backup.

@DailySheetWasher are your periods generally irregular. Sorry you're another sufferer. Seems there are many of us.

Never heard of the ginger thing. Might give that a go.

I'm actually considering giving acupuncture a try. Has anyone done this? I suspect it's not that common for this issue, but I've heard quite good things.

Norethisterone is a holiday essential for me - never had any problems. Tbh, a god send for someone with irregular periods and flooding, especially to stop an unexpected period on holiday!! I suffer from sods law - "no period for 5 months? Hey presto, you're on holiday? Ha, here's me...your period!"

@waddleandtoddle , glad it works for you so well.

I've definitely missed the boat for this month. Arrived today, with attitude 😒

Quick question - should I take the Tranexamic Acid today? I'm day 2 of period, already reasonably heavy, but I've got so much on this weekend! 2 birthdays, 1 anniversary and staying away 1 night and really worried I'll have an accident 😒 Is it just too late though? I hear an early period can happen after taken this, which would be the LAST thing I'd want! I don't see why it would, as it's not hormonal, but that's what I read.

Definitely try the tranexamic acid today and for next couple of days as then you'll know how well it works and if you get side effects. For me it definitely made flow lighter.

I'm sorry OP I haven't read the full thread but just wanted to say I use tranexamic acid.
When I had startings of my period in March I started taking it (when on holiday) 2 tablets 3x a day.
I found this helped a lot to the extent that I then couldn't actually work out when my heaviest day should have been 🤦🏼‍♀️
I was able to use the pool and found myself changing sanitary wear when there was not yet a need.

Have no experience of the period delay drug.

Either way I hope it works for you :)
