Sudden fast heart rate - any idea why?

I’ve woken up tonight with a heart rate 30bpm faster than it is usually. Every time I try to fall back to sleep I seem to wake up with the feeling my heart is racing. My heart rate is 80 so it’s not really that fast but compared to its normal 50 it is quite different.

no fever, feeling slightly sick.

Is it likely I’m just ill and that’s what is causing this, or something else?

No OP said 80 which is 30 bpm above her normal heart rate.

I can't believe the dilly dallying here!!

Get in touch with your gp now. I'm guessing you meant 130 bpm rather than 30?

This needs to be checked out so please get onto them now and tell the gp what's happening.

No I would have called the GP if it was 130.

It’s 30 bpm higher than usual.

And it’s completely back to normal this morning. How weird. But if there is more of that to come during perimenopause I’m really not looking forward to it.

I get this if my digestion is unsettled/refluxy. I find propping myself up on a bank of pillows helps it settle and I can get back to sleep.

Some upper abdo pain but that seems to come and go. Every time I drop off to sleep I’m back awake with this pounding heart. It’s been 3 hours now. If it’s perimenopause how long do these kind of episodes last for?

Abdomen pain, and disturbed sleep can be symptoms of heart attack in women. It presents quite differently from male heart attacks.

Thanks for posting that - I had no idea of the symptoms to look out for!

I'd imagine that I wouldn't feel completely fine today if it was a heart attack? I was just going to forget about it and only contact the GP if it happened again?

I would contact the GP for advice. I think there are tests they can run which detect a heart attack, even if you feel well now.

I work in cardiology, 80 isn’t fast, I appreciate it’s faster than what’s normal for you, but it’s nothing we would be concerned about. I think you noticing it is making it worse, because you’re getting stressed about it.

Could be anxiety, stress, caffeine, dehydration, illness, or could be some other non cardiac issue.

This has been happening to me too, waking me in the night, topped 160bpm at its worst. GP thinks SVT. ECG normal and awaiting referral to cardiologist. I find limiting caffeine and no alcohol helps a lot

Wow 160 is crazy high! Hope they find an answer soon and all is ok.

That’s reassuring, thank you.

Bingo to those who said COVID. Tested positive today.

Ah! Glad you found an answer.

My heart does it sometimes when I've been for a meal - body processing rich food and alcohol.

I was also going to suggest covid as mine is still doing this- 7 months after covid. ECG and blood tests normal and GP just said- it’s covid, sorry.

perfect, I’ll just wait it out then…
